'98 (I think) scenic exhaust blow

Unread post by sp »

I have an S reg scenic with a 1.6l K7M engine which started making a noise like there was a hole in the exhaust after it had some work done on it. The blow is coming from where the downpipe connects to the bottom of the manifold. Does anyone know if there is meant to be an O-ring or something between the 2 parts? At the moment there is nothing there and the downpipe just pushes onto the manifold and is held by a clamp with 2 bolts.
The manifold has a curved edge which looks like it pushes nicely into the bell shape of the downpipe so I didn't think it needs anything else in there but thought I would try and find out before I stick gungum in there to try and fix it :)

It needs a special reinforced sealing ring, usually made of tightly packed thin wire compressed into a special shape, they are about a tenner for your local dealer i believe,
When you fit it, make sure you get the washers in the right order as there should be a heatproof washer on there, and if its in the wrong place the springs get knackered very quickly

That was quick :) Thanks. Hopefully I will be able to find one tomorrow. I wonder where the original one disappeared to.

I went to the Renault parts place near here and they said there is no ring that goes between the manifold and the downpipe on my scenic. So I just got some assembly paste to stick around it. Found out that one of the nuts had come loose (again). Put the paste on, swapped the nut with one that holds the heat shield on and everything seems ok now. I guess the guy that stopped the oil leak put the nuts back in different places and that one kept coming loose.
