Worldwide fuel costs.

Unread post by fastandfurryous »

As a number of people have recently mentioned in posts, fuel costs appear to be rising quite dramatically at the moment. A couple of garages near me have now broken the 90p/litre mark for Diesel fuel, with Unleaded hovering at 86-87p/litre. I know the UK is known for it's high fuel costs (second only to scandinavian countries?) but this is getting very expensive. A tank of Fuel is costing almost as much as the average man earns in a day.
As we have quite a large number of international members here, What sort of price do you pay for Unleaded/Diesel, and how does this relate to average earnings (IE what is the true cost of fuel) If you know, the percentage of Tax on that would be interesting. In the uk, it's something like 80-85% tax.
I am particularly interested, as the UK environment agency has recently completely buggered up the financial viability of Bio-diesel, and so the price of mineral fuels will have to become sky-high before renewable fuels become cost effective.

I filled up last night, 88.9p/litre was a bit of an unpleasant suprise to say the least.
I put 60 litres in at 88.9p/litre £53.34 and do that 2 / 3 times a month.

Denmark:
Cheapest listprice for unleaded according to http://www.benzinpriser.dk, cheapest 0.84p per litre, the most expensive is 0.86p/litre.
For diesel it is 0.74p/litre to 0.78p/litre.
Diesel is generelly cheaper then unleaded here in Denmark.
DK Kroner -> UK Pounds > according to http://www.valutakurser.dk

SVO is Straight Vegetable Oil. As opposed to Transesterified vegetable oil. Don't let Customs and Excise catch you, or you'll loose your car, and get a big big fine. I am going to be registering with them so that I can pay duty on Vegetable oil soon... but I haven't done it yet.

Thanks FnF. [^] But it's not a problem as I don't run on the mix.. I tried it a while back just out of curiosity as a friend had sold me 5 gallons of veggie oil for a fiver. Now thats run out I don't bother.. I only do 4,000 or less a year now so its not worth taking any risks.. Shame though as the car deffinately runs better on it. [V]

Its not something I do often as its got a Lucas (prince of darkness) pump and does not run well on it, however in an emergency its good to have the option[;)] I would never use it in the HDi as its supposed to bugger the timing up something rotten. PSA only recomend a 5% mix in the HDi - though I have heard of forum members using more.

You've got two diesel cars and you only do 4000 miles per year?
It costs me 8p per mile in fuel generally, so lets assume it costs you the same (lighter car with slightly more efficient engine but a fuel drinking slushbox.). Cost per year is £320, if you converted to petrol you'd probably be looking at another £100 a year, or less than a tenner a month. I'd run a V6 if it wasn't for the fuel cost....

Hi Kowalski, I bought the Aura on behalf of a female friend, and got reinbursed when she had seen it, kicked its tyres, hung some curtains in it, filled the back with cuddley toys, and sold her VauxpoorAstra Merit auto-20 mpg for silly money [:I]...
Since then (a year) the Aura has done about 6,000 miles. But I have the dubious pleasure of looking after it [:D]. Total between the 2 cars is around 10,000 miles a year. [:)]

Diesel is around 88 euro cents, 95 octane petrol around €1.10 and 98 octane at €1.18 (i don't pay much attention to the prices actually, as long as €20 get me back home[:P]) per litre.
I still remember the time diesel was at €0.35 per litre...
Veggie is around €0.78 per litre on retailers.
Oh, taxes are also a great deal of the price.
You know, people used to protest and go out on the streets everytime the government would increase a little bit the prices (almost every year).
Now, with fuel prices liberalized, it's everyman for himself, as they go up almost every week. Of course, no-one complains much nowadays.
It was probably due to the "up against the system" feeling. I feel like calling my fellow countrymen jerks (we are mostly "hill-billies" - sorry guys, T-bird and Rostami, but i had to get it out)

Over here Unleaded is cheapest and 98 octane usually is about the same price as the diesel (if not cheaper).
When I paid 88.9 for the diesel, unleaded was 83.9. With the milage I do (20k/pa), its approaching the point where LPG would pay for itself within a couple of years. I've got two Xantias to kill before I get a new car though.
