Never actually heard of a "The Moon under Water", turns out to be an essay by George Orwell and wait for it, and I know you know this already Mick.....a pub in Watford which just so happens to be the Wiki pub selected for its article....

Anyone familiar with Orwell's Essay :?: I certainly wasn't but it basically sets out his requirements for a perfect pub.

This wiki article gives a summary. The Moon Under Water

for example
3 The pub is quiet enough to talk, with the house possessing neither a radio nor a piano.
4 The barmaids know the customers by name and take an interest in everyone.
5 It sells tobacco and cigarettes, aspirins and stamps, and "is obliging about letting you use the telephone".

There's (or was, maybe gone now due to Covid) a Wetherspoons in Milton Keynes called 'The Moon Under Water'...

I often wondered how it got its name but now due to the wonders of the FCF I now have a better idea :D

I'm not sure any 'Spoons establishment can meet the standard laid out for the perfect pub but back in those far-off days when we used to go out for properly social group bike rides they were super places to stop off at mid-ride for a cheap and hearty breakfast and bottomless coffee...

On that alone they get my vote :)

Sure that's the right one Gibbo is this one at Tintern not more on your doorstep? The link you posted is for one down at Clevedon.

Edit Yes the Tintern one looks like it has been redeveloped and is no longer a pub. This is what it looked like when the google cameras passed in 2018

......Moon and Sixpence gone!

Named after Somerset Maughan's 1940's Novel. There's even a Moon and Sixpence in Steve's old stomping ground Whitby

Really?
I don't remember that. Not that I remember much anyway. :(

Edit:
Had a snoop and it has closed. Was never there when I was, haven't been down that way in twenty years.

The shop next door was where my wife worked when we were married. Can't remember what The Moon And Sixpence" might have been.

The "Dracula Experience" was a photographers, two brothers ran it. I bought my Hasselblad from them.

Another literary source for a pub name. Somerset Maugham's The Moon and Sixpence, based on the life of Paul Gauguin

If you look on the ground in search of a sixpence, you don't look up, and so miss the moon.
"so busy yearning for the moon that he never saw the sixpence at his feet."
"so busy yearning for the moon that he never saw the sixpence at his feet."

I knew when it came up that it was the wrong one Neil but couldn't be bothered to go back and change it, I knew you would spot it. I clicked on the link for the Tintern one and that came up. :-D
