mickthemaverick wrote: 15 Mar 2023, 22:57 Thanks Neil, my friend who is thinking of getting a Leaf has one overiding factor. She wants to be able to drive to her Mum's without recharging and that is a journey of 97 miles so it suggests to me that we need to be looking at the newer 30kW versions for her needs. Now it will probably mean a higher mileage car to stay within budget so I'll start looking!! :-D
I don't think the BMW I3 has quite dropped into the bargain basement category, and of course if you are a driver who takes it into a main dealer for "servicing" with BMW expect compulsory wallet-emptying whatever trivial fault they find.

The REX model may well be a good idea for the driver who needs to do a regular trip of 100 miles without charging. Most I3 Rex drivers I have spoken to at the chargepoint rarely call on the petrol range extender.
Review of the 2014 model i3 Rex.

....it’s a range extender, which means that the petrol engine never actually drives the 19in wheels as in hybrids, such as the poster-child Toyota Prius. In the i3 Range Extender, there’s a rear-mounted, two-cylinder, 647cc scooter-derived engine that works as an on-board power station, coming on stream to charge up the floor-mounted, 230kg battery pack. The rear wheels are only ever driven by the 168bhp, 184lb ft electric motor. So, there’s always monster torque on tap…

What’s the benefit of having the petrol engine on board?
Whereas the all-electric i3 is out of juice after a maximum of 100 miles, the Range Extender’s engine allows up to 186 miles (following an eight-hour battery charge’s worth of go). Once the battery pack’s energy has been swallowed up, there’s a tiny nine-litre fuel tank to allow 80-mile hops courtesy of the 34bhp petrol engine. Useful, but hardly an intercity GT car.
Here is a 2014 I3 Range Extender model which hasn't quite dipped under £10,000 here 69,000 miles (£10,995)

BB Leaf is needing a couple of new tyres, so trying out ASDA. Quite straightforward the price shown is what you pay "fully fitted" and you choose an appointment slot with the fitters of your choice. Set up for Thursday.

Maybe there's too much info these days I wonder if anyone can notice the difference between 69db and 71db on the road noise thing.

Heavily influenced by this ad I chose goodyear, £75 each fully fitted (£10 off for 2)

I noticed while driving the A1M from Washington to Durham that I had to turn the stereo off and conversation was difficult, thought it was the car.
Next day on different roads realised that the car was very, very quiet.
Just the road surface on that stretch of the A1.

I currently have Toyo Proxes on, from Oponeo, local garage fits them. Sixty quid each.
Previous tyres were Sailun Atrezzo, also very quiet but have become hard to get. National Tyres have them and they are welcome to keep them.

I have round, black ones on mine. They seem to do the job insofar as I need!

I've noticed a lot the extreme differences in noise produced by various surfaces... Also, the incredible level of noise made by the tyres fitted to some SUV, huge saloon and electric vehicles that seem to run tyres more suited to a tractor or a lorry! In fact, lorries are a lot quieter...

I haven't needed tyres for quite a while but on two previous occasions I used 'Tyres on the drive' part of Halfords for the best deal, they came out, fitted and balanced new tyres for less money than any of the local suppliers.
Perhaps Neil could do a comparison with his deal to see if they're still competitive.

Would have saved a couple of quid Gibbo, due to the discount being 10% and not £10. If you want a particular time slot they have a scale of additional charges up to £27 if you want a 2 hour slot, but if you go 8am to 8pm its free although showing £1 for next day right now.

If I had wanted my tyres fitted at home It would have been £14 extra maybe standard but the nearest mobile fitter would have had a bit of a drive to our postcode.

The tyre replacement through ASDA tyres portal was excellent, turned up 15 mins early for a 11.30-12.30 timeslot
at SMJ Tyre Services, and all the good reviews were confirmed by our experience, friendly efficient staff and a smooth excellent value process all round.

Our local ASDA used to do tyres but dropped them years ago now. They inherited the tyre bay from Woolco and subsequently Carrefour.
