There was a place up Jim's way on Car SOS on Nat Geo the other day - two mature people who operate from a barn type place who claim to be able to make silicone hoses for any vehicle if supplied with a broken one or template. What's better is that they do them with a matt finish for the classic market. They were supplying a set of Lotus Elan coolant hoses for the show. I don't suppose they are particularly cheap, but neither would genuine Citroen items be for a V6.. I'm sure most bits will be repairable or available somehow. It's amazing what old tat some folk run and still get parts for!

Yep....its why I never trust other people purchases with oil/water or brakes....but that is bad LOL, you can see the other areas of slag in the metal, very poor Chinese iron made fro old radiators probably....CitroJim wrote:Shock Horror![]()

err, cheap brakes ? save £20 ?, yep that's a really good idea. I think it is to do with poor disks that have contaminants and thus fracture when good pads apply heat.....

Only ever bought discs and pads from motor factors. Even the VTR I had ran motaquip brakes and only got replaced as I decided to do discs and pads all round, replaced with drivetec which took some pounding too!
I'm guessing these are chinesium?

As they were off a French car, you sure they were not made of stale cheese?

Don't think those are cracks - they're just imprints from the pads. I tend to find the discs pick those up worse when they are cheap discs and pads though. I do remember seeing a pic of a set of vented discs where the outer surface was worn right through and the pads were running on the vanes inside
Must have made stopping noisily interesting!!

One is for sure mate, the disc "rings" dull when tapped with a hammer....not all are, some are pits in the surface indication contaminated Iron of a very LOW quality.

Re: shortly to become an Activa owner...Project Stictiva
When I was doing my conversion I rang Citroen Glasgow and asked if they had any V6 discs and pads in stock. They'd had the discs in stock for years and were happy to discount them to get them gone. They sold me the discs for £48 the pair. Unfortunately they didn't have pads which meant they were going to be special order and they were £98.
I opted for Pagid pads as they were £40.
When Robert at BL Auto's drove the car he asked what brakes were on it as they were Sh!t. When I drove it before the V6 went in I hadn't driven it hard or far. I noticed a big difference in the brakes but when I first drove it with the V6 in it I was barreling up to a round about on the A8 and was wondering if I was actually going to be able to stop it.
I was about to order a genuine set of Citroen pads but when walking through the workshop I saw a parcel wrapped in shrink wrap and I remember 18 months ago I'd bought two sets of genuine Citroen pads on eBay for £23. At that point the Pagid pads came out and were thrown straight in the bin, I took it for a good run after fitting the genuine pads and the difference was staggering.
Keep an eye out for genuine brakes on eBay Sticky, they really are worth the extra coin!
David.

I have usually used Mintex pads, and have always been happy with them.

Re: shortly to become an Activa owner...Project Stictiva
Hi David....yep I have been looking for a number of "stock" items, so quite well priced atm..... Ebay.fr France is a good source and I am sure will become the only source soon
I got 2x sets of Mintex fronts for 65-oo Euro and 3 sets of rear for 40 Euro...good to know the Citroen originals work as well....(always thought they were Paget however)
EDIT: Ebat.Fr...france search Xantia V6 http://www.ebay.fr/sch/i.html?_odkw=xan ... acat=98845" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
As a note: I wiped some phosphoric acid over the new disks to check for contaminants in the metal, not a spot so I am happy with the quality of the casting, also if you check the internal fins/vents, look to see how smooth the casting surface is inside, the smoother it is the better the type of casting procedure/molding (the Shi-teel ones from China are rough)

Can you spot what is missing ?..........so good to have a donor car within 20 steps, it has saved two trips/delays so far.
the original under-seal appears as slightly green, the darker areas are new stone-chip and a covering of wax-oil
