Fluid level : after adding 1.5L on Saturday, and now the car appears to very slowly rise and fall (8 mins! one way), the fluid level is correct on lowest setting, with engine running, after the tank spewed about 250cc's out. Are we happy that the fluid level is ok?
............
assuming the car does lose some LDS, is a leak the cause of my isses this weekend do we think?

John
John, Not spottting the obvious, but if you had to put 1¼ litres in, there must be a leak...the fluid is not like engine oil on a drive, I only noticed my rack failure because I always parked my car in the same bay at work and it was raining. Initially I thought fuel leak.

Sorry to say but you're going to have to get your overalls on.

I'd start steering rack input shafts, easier to see from inside the cabin after removing the grommet. Then both front legs, then remove the undertray as the righthand catches quite a bit from resevior and pump..... Then.....
Anyone else willing to add?

i agree Stu, annoyingly ;)

I suspect the car has always used a bit of LDS in the 7 years, I cant remember clearly though.
I did a rack change a couple of years ago ... ...
I will make a thorough inspection over the next days I am sure... may get the car up safely and supported whilst it still is drivable though.

Check the front struts for leaks / weeping too - another well-known issue requiring strut replacement.

was just playing around in Diagbox with car running. Top, normal, and low shown. (I will almost definitely have moved the front roll bar yesterday, despite tipex, whilst making sure the HC wasn't seized, not to worried about that at this stage)

Any of that mean anything? ;) - i guess things are talking to each other at least..
the front filtered height on pic 3 looks odd.. that's all I can see

btw still taking many minutes to go from low to high, and more than one cycle of the Hyd pump

John

I think your steering rack will cause air to enter the system causing your frothing problem.

Get rack refurbished and then do the mod. I removed the lump on the side to make easier to fit a rubber bush.

I'll find my earlier post re this and post it on this post FYI.

thanks Kenny (based on your posts) I did fit a new rack fairly recently ;) I did a mod with some rubber boot, paint, loads of marine type grease etc.. It all went well! I was going to inspect that area tonight but.

update..

I went to the barn armed with ramps and trolley jack, and set about things... just before then I plugged diagbox back in, and whilst staring at the parameters, made the car rise and fall about 10 times! the journey from low to high has came down to 3 1/2 mins, the fluid looked less frothy, and despite checking the levels so much yesterday, more came out of the filler neck, not much though.. (air causing fluid rise as it escapes?)

I changed the front ride height, as now in drive mode there wasn't any front suspension (see yesterday ARB comment) - after all of that, the raise to max is now how it used to be, about 2 mins!

TLDR, the car is now like it always was! looks good front and back, softly sprung, I cleared some more lingering errors, left it on ramps for now, and shut the door..

dunno

John,

If you are happy with they way it looks suspension wise, I would just leave it.
