Not usually for a non-telematic unit. The VP2 fitted can be analogue or digital and then there are different aerials for telematics units etc. You have a VP2 Digital (for which digital is essential for the DAB feature), so must already have the correct aerial. It may be split up the line near the base unit that houses other electronics for amplification / splitting etc. The aerial base is the most likely cause of poor reception after checking the back of the Head Unit for a secure connection, as this is where water ingress causes corrosion of these electronic parts inside the base.
A firmware issue rarely fixes something that was already working, that has started getting a weaker reception - it's more likely the water issue.
