2016 C4 - Heavy steering and vibration?

Unread post by georgealex »

Hi all, so I bought another Citroen :)

This time a 2016 C4 hatchback (not cactus).

I had assumed that the steering would be very light on this as the reviews all mention this but it seems much heavier to me, I didn't really notice on test drive before buying but it's not very light at low speeds.

I've had a C5 Aircross before and that was what I would call "light" the steering on this feels more like my old X3.

It's got me worried that there is an issue with it although no noises, has anyone driven one of these that can put my mind at rest?

The steering is kind of vague but also heavy, not power steering failure heavy but heavier than I expected, there is resistance there.

Furthermore whilst driving home on the motorway all was well but as soon as I hit a rough patch at about 60 I got quite a bit of vibration through the wheel, I am wondering if the two are related some how perhaps this one could be wheel balancing.

Anyway all else seems to be good with the car so hoping I haven't picked up a lemon.

We've had a few C4s and not noticed anything odd with the steering so to feel heavy does not seem right. When you say rough patch, do you mean a rough section of road ? If bought from a dealer take it back to be checked. Before that make sure the tyres are pumped up.

Thanks yes a rough patch of road on smooth tarmac no vibration in the steering wheel.

It's hard over text post but how light/heavy would you say the steering was on yours?

On my old C5 aircross the steering was so light you could turn it with a finger even at total standstill, I didn't expect the older C4 to be that light but had assumed it wouldn't be far off

I would not say the C4s were heavy or very light, just normal. Are the tyres on the C4 wider than the C5 ones, are they a decent make ?

Not sure on that one this is on 16s my C5 was on 18s but can't remember for the life of me the tyre size. Tyres all decent brands

Are they pumped up to the right pressures?

Need to check this tomorrow, would this be in regard to the steering or the vibration?

The heavy steering.
I was more thinking of the vibration due to metal to metal contact where there should be rubber bushes.

You should get a rough idea by looking at the mounts from above to see if they are centered on the holes.

You could put your car reg in a tyre site to see what size they come up with.
