I'd guess the long term plan of the car manufacturers is to move the consumer/user on to a lease/rental/subscription service for their car. By making it nigh-on impossible to self-maintain, or even to use a local garage for repairs, the user is pushed towards using the main dealer. Add in to that the high cost of parts and servicing and the user is nudged towards the 'Only one fixed monthly cost' model to use your new car, and in three years time you can swap to a brand new car etc, etc. The manufacturers then get a nice reliable income stream for the foreseeable future, and the consumer/user never gets to own their own car. :(
