Faraday box steering lock
Hi
My DS5 has keyless entry and start with key in my pocket.
Would a Faraday box be a wise investment?
Also would a steering lock be good idea?

Yes to both I think.
As I get older I think a lot about the hereafter - I go into a room and then wonder what I'm here after.

We have a car (Skoda) with keyless entry and have turned it off in the car settings since I do not need/want it. It is easy enough to use the buttons on the fob.

Re: Faraday box steering lock
Definitely get one, modern theives can scan and clone your key fob from a few meters away and unlock your car from a laptop, probably drive it away too ,even if you disable the keyless entry. If you don't have a Faraday pouch then leave you fob/keys as far away from the car as possible. They are not expensive.

There was this on the Beeb a few days ago.
Not an isolated case either.

Re: Faraday box steering lock
Yes definitely get one. And yes if you can disable the keyless entry feature, yes they could still start the car using relay theft but the alarm would go off when they opened the door, if keyless entry is enabled then when they use relay theft it turns off the alarm as they unlock it just as the key would do.
Another option are 'sleeping' fob batterys. no cheap but an effective solution that works completely passively, & you dont need to remember to arm it like you would do with a steering lock. the other problem with steering locks is you actually have to fit them every time. a lot of people just nipping into a shop for 5 minutes would not bother to fit it, problem is the car could be gone in less time than that.

Re: Faraday box steering lock
You can also get Faraday wallets and pouches that may be more suitable.
Halfords have then as will many independent car shops and of course eBay, Amazon etc.
May even invest in one myself, although car crime around here is practically unknown.
A posh Escort was stolen from up the street but that was nearly 40 years ago. The only one.

Or you could sell your DS5 with all its modern, and iffy re safe from thieves, tech and buy a proper 20 year old car with low mileage, no complex electronics and have a holiday in Hawaii with the funds you will liberate!!

Good idea Mick, but then the thieves could use a coat hanger to get in the doors, nick the stereo or drive off after busting the steering lock and hot-wiring the ignition. Save them he'll a lot of hassle!mickthemaverick wrote: 18 May 2025, 13:13 Or you could sell your DS5 with all its modern, and iffy re safe from thieves, tech and buy a proper 20 year old car with low mileage, no complex electronics and have a holiday in Hawaii with the funds you will liberate!!![]()
And if that wasn't enough, getting the spares to repair the damage they had done would take alot of time and luck.

Re: Faraday box steering lock
I can't argue with that Stu except to say that the thieves probably wouldn't want to steal it in the first place and who wants cassette players these days?Sloppysod wrote: 20 May 2025, 18:00Good idea Mick, but then the thieves could use a coat hanger to get in the doors, nick the stereo or drive off after busting the steering lock and hot-wiring the ignition. Re: Faraday box steering lock
If you mean the battery for the remote locking then this has no effect on the ability of the fob to start the car. You need a Faraday shield to stop the probing signal from outside the house activating the fob.
