Another "Quirk" found.........or is it a feature OR is it a Fault ?..... Screen Washers

The other day I thought I had a fault with the screen washers, low pressure or nothing at all !
Well, when Jim was down we randomly topped up the screen washer fluid and they worked at full pressure ....fixed its self I thought ...typical French electrics !!!

Today, it is raining hard so both front and rear wipers on...nothing from the front screen washers !........ After a sort time I turned the rear wiper off on the stalk. I then tried the washers and they started working again at full pressure.......ummm

Switched on the rear wiper, tried the front washers' nothing, tried the rear wash, pump runs, , switch off the rear wiper, front washers work !..... So is this how early cars were wired or is it a fault ?

I have a belief there's only one pump on a Xantia with two outlets - one to the rear and one to the front. The pump has two impellers working in opposite directions. The pump motor rotates one way for the front and the other for the rear.

The critical part of this arrangement is a one-way (non-return) valve in one of the lines... If it's leaky you'll get what's happening to you. The one-way valve is, I think, under the wing near the reservoir and pump.

It'll be full of clag. They often wash out and are good to go again...

Hi Jim

When the rear wiper is turned on there is not even a sound when I try to use the front washer jets....as if the pump is turned OFF (rather than not squirting/empty/low water pressure). The front washer jets work only when the rear wiper is off

Ahh, then there's a bit of electrical fun going on... We'll need a wiring diagram ;)

Not sure yet. I have the diagrams in front of me. It's all quite complex, very French and interconnected... Confirmed just the one pump that reverses...

I'm going to have to research exactly how it works... hang on in there ;)

They do Matt....I do not think they have been under water. The car was owned by a very experienced "sailor" and naval engineer.... I expect he had the nous to remove his light board before dunking his boat in the water.

All cleaned up, contacts on the bulbs buffed (they all work !), earths and live connectors tightened etc....all works on the bench power source........will re-make the main cable and rewire these to it with new end fittings next.

Ah, good progress.

I was quite surprised, some of the mossy bulbs on mine were also functional (so have gone back in the spares pile)

I've made the jump to LED on one of my trailers - they are "sealed for life" type lamp clusters (so just need to hope the undefined "life" is more close to a giant tortoise than a fruit fly!!)
