FMIC

[C4COUPE SI]

I want to fit a FMIC to my 08 HDI coupe ready for a re-map by HDI TUNING.
I have found a core size 550x140x65mm 2.5 in/out by toyosports. Would this fit? is it big enough?
I am conscious of boost/pressure drop by fitting a huge FMIC.
How much cutting of the bumper is involved? I think i can run the piping through the hole left by the standard intercooler?? and do i fix it to the crash bar?
I am asking so not to waste a day figuring it all out when i can get some tips from yourselves and just crack on and do it

Good morning!

I'm not an expert but will give you my thoughts,

If yours is the 110 HDi that's the 16v 1.6 HDi DV6 engine. It has a front mount intercooler already, a small but surprisingly deep "twin pass" unit next to the radiator. (Air from turbo, via "air doser", comes into top right connection, down through half the intercooler, turns 180° in the bottom end "cap" then up the other side and out the left hand connection - again through air doser and onwards into the inlet manifold.

I'm not sure how much of a restriction or limit of cooling this poses, it would be good to gather some temperature data to show if the intercooler is dropping the temperature well. From memory, the inlet air temperature sensor is within the air doser, so a post - intercooler temperature reading would be possible via looking at live data in DiagBox

If the intercooler isn't dropping the temperature well, then I would suggest looking into equipment fitted to the other HDi engine offered in the C4 Coupe = it was also available with the 2.0 16v HDi engine in 138 bhp form.
I would think that may have a larger intercooler and hence be a potential upgrade.

This would alto very likely drop straight into existing mounting points in your car (as I'd think slam panel and radiator support would likely be common to both) hence would make installation more straightforward

Obviously, there is the other potential route to a quicker C4 Coupe which would be seeking swapping the whole car to the 2.0 HDi, would get you niceties like a 6 speed gearbox (think the 1.6 makes do with 5?)

Yes mine is the 110 16v non dpf. It does have the smallish intercooler offset in the front of the car. The car has only done 75.000 miles and is in good nick. I have cleaned the cooler out (just a film of oil). When I was looking for a coupe there were only 2 diesels for sale at the time both 1.6.I have not got a diagbox but will look into getting one or borrowing one.
Will a 2.0ltr intercooler be bigger if it sits in the same housing? Maybe deeper if anything?
I will do some investigation, or if anyone else on here knows if the 2.0 intercooler is larger and will fit would be great.

Just had a look for a 2.0ltr intercooler. They’re the same size core with a different hose set up, looks like a straight through instead of a twin pass.
Looks like I will be going down the aftermarket route with the cooler core size in my first post unless anyone has another suggestion??

That looks spot on, pipe routing for 1.6 turbo petrol and 1.6 hdi is very similar.
Would imagine space in the bumper similar on C4 Coupe to the DS3

Looks like the same side twin pass might be the way forward in terms of routing piping. There is lots of space behind the bumper on the mk1 c4 but fixing it horizontally will be a pain with the mounting points being on the top and bottom of the cooler, going to have to get creative with some flat bar the grinder and welder

I would guess, given the nature of the posts, it's something to with engine tuning, probably the intercooler. but I can't make any sense of what the initials might stand for.

Yes, spot on FMIC : Front Mounted InterCooler, as distinct from a "Top Mount" intercooler (like XUD9TE in say 306)
Strangely I've come across FMIC often, but not it's opposite number (i.e. TMIC for Top mounted) !

Front mount gets a more reliable feed of nice cool air blowing through it but the trade off is generally an increased length (and hence volume) of post turbo charger boost pipework and so potentially increased "turbo lag"

FMIC, or a larger intercooler generally sought as a performance upgrade: demand a higher boost pressure from the turbo, lots more gear generated, hence need of better cooling.
