Upgrading/Updating RNEG

Unread post by MrDaga »

Hi guys.

First of all, I know there's already a lot of information about this topic, but a good part of it is old, and maybe outdated. I just want to be sure that I read the most up to date information before doing something.

So, I bought a used 2011 Peugeot 3008 1.6 HDi Sport, 112cv. From what I was able to understand, it has a RNEG system with the retractable screen on top of the dashboard (photo attached, from my own car). It has version rneg_d_r29a_r29.01. From what I saw in the foruns, the most recent version would be rneg_d_r50b_r50.03. Is this correct? If so, where can I get it from so that I can update it? Should I have some concerns before doing this?

Another question: is the upgrade to RNEG2 a good option? Any other good options? SMEG? Other? I also have a 2010 Peugeot 308 that I upgraded 4 years ago with one Aliexpress android unit, and everything works correctly, besides the poor microphone sound quality that I still didn't have the time to solve. I was hoping that I could do something similar to the Peugeot 3008, but I'm seeing that this is much harder to do. I can't even understand what would happen to the retractable screen if I just put a 2 DIN head unit like I did for the 308. Also, would the security features of the car still work? Would the information in the multiple dashboards appear? (photo attached with the 3 places I mean. generic photo taken from the internet)

One last question: The car has only an AUX input, not even 1 USB. Can I easily replace this AUX plug with a AUX/USB plug? Where can I buy it and what would be the procedure?

Thanks a lot for the support.

  • First, I've moved this topic into the correct MyWay Forum as it's not an RT6.
  • Not sure which info you think is out of date.... you didn't mention anything specific.
  • The latest and last firmware available is rneg_d_r50b_r50.03. I can provide a link for this, if required. As with any firmware, you do this at your own risk and really only should be done if there are specific issues.

See below for changelogs that I have for successive versions:
    • Official changelog RNEG r33b_3309:
      • - New logo
      • System starts up much faster
      • Sound quality has improved audibly
      • Navigating through the menu is much faster- Switching the different modes is much faster
      • Phone connection much more stable
      • Navigating through the phone book is faster
      • BT shuts off after some time if no device is paired
      • GPS fix is ??faster
    • Official changelog RNEG r40b_4003:
      • Different Bluetooth interference (incompatibility with certain phones, loss of Bluetooth Pairing at the beginning of a call, poor sound quality)
      • "UNKNOWN" is displayed instead of the name of the caller when a call is received
      • Under-estimate of the radar speeds for vehicles with the speed unit in miles
      • In Latin America only, restart the audio navigation system (RNEG) after a request for navigation in "demo" mode
      • In navigation mode: put cursor on the GPS mapping, The cursor on the GPS mapping does not reflect the actual position of the vehicle
      • Arrival time is either over-or under-estimated when navigating.
      • Random loss of audio settings after starting the engine
      • Random loss of audio sound after starting the engine
      • Interference in the speakers after starting the engine
      • Multifunction screen at random yellow
      • Random loss of time and altitude
      • The telephone directory or the history of the calls of the radio navigation system RNEG is no longer visible on the multifunction scaffold
    • Official changelog RNEG r50b_50.03:
      • Random restart at the beginning of a route calculation
      • Several bugs in the Bluetooth (incompatibility with some phones, Bluetooth pairing loss at the beginning of a phone call, poor sound quality)
      • The message "unknown" appears instead of the name of the caller when a call comes in
      • Incorrect calculation of radar speed limit for vehicles with speedometer in miles
      • (only in Latin America) Navigation (RNEG) starts the "demo mode" with activated navigation
      • In navigation mode: Cursor frozen in GPS map. GPS adjustment cursor position relative to actual vehicle position
      • Estimated time of arrival is overestimated or underestimated during route guidance
      • accidental loss of audio settings after starting the engine
      • random sound loss after starting the engine
      • Cracking in the speaker after starting the vehicle
      • Random yellowing in the multifunction display
      • accidental loss of time and altitude
      • Call list not visible in the multifunction display
Your vehicle equipment including the retractable screen and Head Up Display are designed to work with the system installed. If you are going Android, you can likely forget most of these and any parking assistance features and any menu options to configure vehicle parameters - that's just the way it is.

Personally, I wouldn't bother with RNEG2 (RT6) as that is also an old system and have their own issues.
If you enjoy your vehicle and it's features, I would leave it well alone.

Thanks for the reply and for sharing your experience, Mark.

With my Peugeot 308, when I replaced the RD45 factory unit by an android unit, I didn't lose any features in the car, besides the microphone. I can control everything in the factory display by using touch controls in the android unit. Is it different in 3008's case?

What about replacing the AUX plug by a AUX and USB plug? Is this possible? Is so, what would I need to do? The car doesn't have any USB at all.

And if I keep the original systems as it is, is there some free source of up to date maps?

Thanks again!

RD4 & RD45 are completely different systems to MyWay. As to what functionality you will lose will of course depend on what Android unit you are going to replace it with, but this vehicle as a retractable display for a start and the data is handled differently as with the HUD, totally different to a basic RD45 unit.

Navigation data sent to the HUD and the dashboard (matrix) are specifically calibrated. When you bypass all these for an Android screen, you will just loose the lot I suspect. An Android unit will not be compatible with your HUD, nor the retractable screen. I can tell you that aftermarket mapping won't work on your original display or the HUD.

That won't work unless your Android unit supports them, as you'll have to be able to have a connection to the unit.

Thanks a lot Marc.

Would you please share the links to the system update version and to the navigation data? I bought the car without a memory card in it, so I don't have any navigation version at all.

Hi

I can't supply maps as that is copyrighted software, which is chargeable by PSA, whereas firmware is simply a maintenance update.

Official site:

However, the last official map release for this system was 2018. :(

There is a "French connection" in public website. At least for me it worked. At your own risk. You have PM.
