This railway is definitely well worth a visit and makes a good day out...

Just noticed the nice little white gate with the red circle. Would save a bit of wood if I reduced the full downham market homage on my signal box/shed, which has many vertical bars as well as the cross and red circle, to that simpler but still effective design :-D

I will have to be creative with the red circles...currently I have no tools which will cut a nice circle, but somehow or other I will make it happen without buying the "proper" equipment. :-D

Have you a router or jigsaw Neil?

I first saw a joiner cutting a hole in floor boarding with a router a nail and a piece of string. Simple, quick and effective.

Thanks Steve. That was a nice circle he cut! No I don't have a jigsaw or router easy enough to get one and Lidl the other day was festooned with tools. No firm ideas either about the substrate of the circles. Pure decoration so a certain degree of chattiness not a problem might be hardboard; ply; proper wood; plastic; cast in plaster or concrete; metal...thinking paint tin lids, bit of lead, thin sheet...I do have tin snips etc.

Path of least resistance likely to be in hardboard roughly cut out and then "refined".

A trawl around local industrial estates may reveal a discarded one of these:

The top of which may suit your purposes.

Thanks for that Jim, just read your blog post and I thought you had been a bit quiet FCF wise recently. With your normal constant activity I imagine it will be very difficult for you to "take it easy!". No doubt you will be getting that message from your nearest and dearest loud and clear. :-D

The question is - did you already have the lid sitting at home, or did you have to buy a tub of celebrations purely so you could get the lid and you've had to eat the chocolates under duress ? :)

Two Lids! and two empty boxes, from previous times, but in an unlikely co-incidence , a full tub arrived with the Sainsbury's van this morning as they were on offer.

With the celebrations coming up with the goods, no need for further creativity, although charity shop vinyl LP's/singles were coming up on the radar to be painted red if they only had black :-D

The reason I chose Alston Signal box for my homage was its simplicity.

Recreating a scaled down version of Wylam may have been a bit more challenging.

I guess there was a good reason for perching a signal box there Neil... Visibility a long way along the line needed or is there a tight curve close by?

Didn't realise before today that Hexham has a signal box of the same type as at Wylam. Been there quite a lot recently but never clicked the shutter...didn't know it was there. Wylam and Hexham are both Grade ll Listed and the only examples left in the country of that type.

NewcastleFalcon wrote: 27 Sep 2023, 18:46 Just got one sheet today see how it works and the best way of mounting it. The sheet is 82.5mm x 62.5mm and will remain as such for the mounting trial, and not be cut up into 12 individual panes. If all goes well I will apply the same method to the remaining windows and get the other sheets measured and ordered.

Image
Fitted the 3mm Acrylic sheet, and yes the mounting method works fine for the whole sheet. My measuring was either too precise, or not precise enough. The advantage of not all the 8 windows being the same size is that while the sheet was too tight a fit in the intended window number 1, it was a perfect fit in window number 3. :-D In future measurings it probably is more important to be a small margin under-measured, than too tightly measured or slightly over-measured. To fit it in the intended Number 1 window slot I would have had to do a little shaving of the frame, and some sort of gap probably needs leaving for expansion in any case.
