Re: Remember these.? All our yesterdays
Its in the ingredients aisle now I think, in the major supermarkets certainly still available. Interesting appearance on the FCF back in 2015 Tesco had a 241ml bottle for £1.70, on-line today price is £1.95 so not gone up much in 7/8 years, and indeed pop down to ASDA and its still £1.70.
Bottle looks as if it has been jazzed-up and different shape.

Our Tesco still keeps it where it belongs... In the Tea and Coffee aisle
It's seen more as a baking ingredient, to flavour coffee cakes and so on, rather than a drink...
It does make a tasty latte though

Going to have to give it a try.
I last remember seeing it (at home) in about 1960.

Camp coffee was the only coffee available until the late fifties the Nescafe became all the rage with the 'toffs'.
I remember the first time I had Nescafe I thought is was horrible but the office girls at work had it in tiny tins for lots of money.
Always liked Camp 'Coffee and Chicory essence' as it was labelled.

The evolution of the Camp Label...it used to be 4¼ Fluid Ounces, now does that translate into the 241 ml of the modern offerings or has the quantity got smaller
The marketing now tags on the ingredient/baking market.

Re: Remember these.? All our yesterdays
Talking of smaller quantities I bought my usual 'mega' box of Rice Krispies yesterday for the usual price, which surprised me slightly in the current inflationary state, but look what I discovered when I got home!
Not to mention that when I first started buying Mega boxes there were 710g in a box!! Now I have to shop more often for the same number of breakfasts, more cost!!! If only they taught honesty on marketing courses!!

I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!

That's a neat Camp time-line Neil
I remember them all!
Interesting how the picture on the label had changed over the years to reflect the sensibilities of the period... The two gentlemen are now depicted as equals rather than one being a servant...

Re: Remember these.? All our yesterdays
Something I haven't seen since the late fifties are Rodina tomatoes.
They were round, not plum shaped, and only in small tins, from the bakery at the end of our street.
Sublime, I ate them straight from the tin like sweets. Better than sweets.
I think that they may have been Georgian (where my favourite but too expensive wine comes from).
Rodina* came up in a conversation a few days ago and reminded me to have another look for them.
Just been to Iceland - The Food Warehouse and there were a dozen large tins for six quid, chopped unfortunately but it will be interesting to see if they are as I remember them.
*Alternative name for Russia, loosely applied. Russia used to control Georgia very closely and almost all their agricultural products went to Russia.
The wine I encountered in a Russian restaurant in Stockholm, all rough-hewn wood and upstairs from an outdoor open staircase, Baba-Yaga style.
The food was not particularly pleasant but the wine was cheap and delicious. Made for an interesting conversation with a soldier guarding the palace.
Discovered that Georgian wine could only be sold in Russian restaurants. Available now but not cheap any more.
Mother used to call Camp coffee 'Ersatz coffee'.

My mother was similarly misinformed, I believe Ersatz coffee was the stuff made from acorns during the war as a substitute?

Dad did too... A word he used quite a lot for more than just Camp! I guess it stemmed from his time in Germany at the end of WWII. He used to tell that lots of stuff could be described as 'Ersatz' along that time. I believe it loosely translates to 'Substitute' rather than fake...
He used to tell of ersatz coffee made from ground acorns... And of ersatz bread that was black but he never knew the exact ingredients of that... Soot maybe?

Re: Remember these.? All our yesterdays
It was. Mother was well acquainted with it during the war years as she spent a lot of it in France, Belgium, Holland, Denmark and at the close of the war Poland and Germany.
She thought that Camp was equivalent and was delighted when the Co-Op down the street installed coffee bean roasters and grinders. The percolator took on a new lease of life.

Mick, sorry, our posts crossed... Thinking on exactly the same lines! Oddly, the forum neglected to tell me another post had been made before I submitted mine...

These were no ordinary tinned tomatoes. If Carlsberg made tinned tomatoes...
