He was active for his younger years, mostly in hillclimbs and navigational rallies, then not so as he lost his licence on medical grounds and has sadly died of a heart attack quite a few years ago now. Not forgotten though.

The back of my daughter's 7 seater Fiat proudly proclaims she tackled the 4x4 training course (not in the Fiat ) at the Scottish Offroad Centre here in Fife and i still reckon she could pull handbrake turns if she had to.

As a family I encouraged them all to take part in Autotests and the like to give them the chance to experience driving at its limits so they were better prepared on the road. Too many find their limits on the roads when it is too late. All of my family have found theirs and stay well within them on the road ever since.

Drawback to training your family - one of them brings home a winner's cup 24 hrs before you do!

Didn't say it was once a year, just that it was Christmas occurrence (as well as any other times). :-D

I remember once being at a Main Dealers showroom in Lanarkshire, dressed in oil skins, dripping a tsunami of rainwater on the clean floor of the showroom after inspecting about 6 cars outside in the bucketing rain, including being on the ground to do the suspensions and chassis.
My work colleagues said to the manager it would be better to speak to them rather than me and I retired to Thunderbird 2, as I called it, to strip off and change all my clothes. I was soaked to the skin, quite literally.

I also remember going out in Thunderbird 2 to arrange the rescue of cattle stranded in a field when the Nith burst it's banks at Dumfries. The owner didn't have a clue what to do and we got a local farmer in a huge Ford tractor to go into the field and lead them ( paddling depth ) out along the high ground. The Owner was an idiot and wasn't going to do anything, so we found a local farmer with good knowledge of the land and good herdsman skills and he took feed out to them on the back of the tractor and coaxed them to follow the tractor to the field gate and a ( expensive ) cattle transporter. The owner was not best pleased at the bill.

Image

Snowflakes love it for countless reasons...

Often used to illustrate rose-tinted 'good old days...' Those of us around at the time knew the truth...
I have looked at this picture and I am still not sure of it's age. However.

Screenshot 2023-02-10 5.28.44 PM.png
Look in the blue and orange circles and there is no evidence of photo shopping - would be very difficult especially in the orange area.
In the blue area is stick on lettering for the lamp post not stencilled.

The Marina bumper and grille have been well battered. There is cataloy or similar repairs to the wing edges.

The guy's shoes in the green circles appear to be padded ankle and tongue types and well worn.

The girls appear to be wearing lace up trainers not plimsols or tennis shoes - red circles.

For these reasons I am going for the first half of the 80's. I don't know why it is in black and white but, given the clarity of the image, I would suggest it is a camera image not digital and black and white images were cheaper than colour then.

Does colour help, and the photographer and the book it appeared in help :?:

Found using the dark arts, you are welcome to peek if you want. Looks like he's working on a decent day as opposed to the muddy puddle :-D The marina is that sort of sandy beige and not in its first flush of youth.

Wow! What a find Neil! That's solid gold! How on earth did you find it?

The text accompanying that photo would suggest you are bang-on in your dating of early 80s Dave :D And yes, a gorgeous, sunny day... Just shows how turning it monochrome, flattening the contrast and making it changes it very significantly to make it look al dull and possibly damp day!

I feel I fell into the same trap may have done on Facebook, taking it at face value and not doing the deep detective work as done on this very forum :D

It's been an incredibly interesting and enjoyable thread :D

Never trust a photo on Facebook ;)
