Well the oven is still working so hopefully I have got to the bottom of the issue with it.

I had really hoped to get quite a few things done today as our guests headed home in the early afternoon so I could quit the awkward socialising.

Then the weather of course absolutely nose dived.

I eventually gave in after about half an hour of trying to ignore the sleet.

Only thing I managed to achieve was replacing the bit of tape on the R25 airbox with some chemical metal.

Image

Will slap a bit of paint on it once the rest has been cleaned, will be less obvious then. Also swapped the 10mm nut holding the lid on for a thumbscrew so I no longer need tools to open/close the air filter housing.

There's a local classic car show on the morning of January 1st which I'm going to take the Renault along to. I'd *really* like to have at least had the opportunity to have washed it before then...

I plan to be there in Bluebell if the weather is reasonable... Fingers crossed!

Stop moaning abut the weather, somewhere in deepest Africa there's a little girl trudging three miles with a bucket to a dirty water hole to make a tv advert for the Water-Aid charity.

All we have to do is pop the bucket out the front door, fills itself!
Just how lucky is that!

Speaking of weather, my son asked if I would take him to the airport next week as he is going to the Canaries for some nice warm weather. Saw in this mornings Dagens Nyheter that the weather there is not what he was hoping for.

Tempting me now, I've been to Tenerife several times and up to the top of Teide a few times, there's always 'some' snow at the top.
I find May and September are the best times to go.

Big difference between things I need to be outside though and things I *want* to be doing. It's odd how 5C or so here manages to feel far colder than it does up north, guessing it's humidity does it.

Tomorrow the R25 is getting washed one way or another. I'm not taking her to a show in this state. Sadly it will just be a wash, polishing and such will have to wait a few months - especially as there may be paintwork happening along with the rust repairs.

Looking forward to next week and getting the front suspension sorted out though. Having had a bottom ball joint separate on me before I'm somewhat nervous of knocking noises if I don't absolutely know for certain where they're coming from.

The family got me a fun little toy for Christmas.

Polaroid's tiniest camera, and about as compact as I think you can make one that's fully analogue rather than digital with a printer built in.

It's really hard to tell from a photo how tiny it is. Here it is modelled next to a 635 and a sadly these days film-less Spectra Onyx.

Image

Obviously absolutely not a high quality photographic instrument here, it's just something for a bit of occasional fun. I quite like seeing what I can get out of cameras like this.

The Spectra though is the one I'm sorry I never got a chance to use properly. It's apparently quite a different beast to most cameras with the Polaroid badge, and has some really good quality glass inside and a decent autofocus system...plus the sheer size of the "negative" means the definition should be really good. Yes it *is* a negative... believe it or not, the modern Polaroid process is a negative process...reading up on how the print process actually works broke my brain a little bit! Quite how someone was able to come up with a package that could be built into what is essentially a sheet of paper which is able to capture the image (in full colour), shield the detection layer once the paper is ejected, then develop and fix the image all without user intervention baffles me. It's quite an engineering achievement.

I've still got what is the opposite of your 'smallest' Zel, my Kodak DC120 my first digital camera, i'ts been round the world three times and to the USA several times, only 1.2 megapixels but produces quite good photos and runs on four AA batteries.

I've still got my old original digital camera... An Olympus I bought in 2001... I no longer use it but used to use it for a lot of the photos I used to post on here during my automotive adventures...

It proved to be very tough and resistant to being covered in oil, LHM and diesel at times...

If you want it for your vintage collection Zel, you'll be more than welcome to it...

Think the oldest digital I've got is a Sony Mavica FD85 from around 2000 as I recall. Which does take surprisingly decent photos all things considered.

Image

Had a rather special bit of vintage tech arrive today in the form of a not absolutely hanging example of a Compucorp 324G. They're rare machines in any form, but being a UK market example (identifiable by the Sumlock branding as Compucorp partnered with them for the UK distribution) makes this even more rare. Oh...and having the original case probably isn't exactly common either.

Image

Unlike my original example, this one actually works.

Image

Which is likely thanks to someone having removed the batteries before they had time to dissolve half the innards and the display. I've not had time to do anything today with it aside from take those two photos and confirm that it survived shipping. I'll do a bit more experimentation and get some better photos in due course.

Yes it's just a calculator, but it's one that's been something of a unicorn for me as someone with an interest in vintage technology basically as long as I can remember. These were very, very advanced machines for their time.

Today was breezy and cold but not really too bad so out came the pressure washer.

This car really needed it. I'm pretty sure this is the first time this poor car has had a wash since at least 2017 when it was put back on the road, possibly longer.

Just horribly ingrained dirt and green gunk everywhere.

Of course because it was cold the hose on the pressure washer just turned into a 25 metre long spring.

Image

I did spend a not insignificant amount of time trying to untangle this however it was having none of it...so it got shoved in the corner still in a mess. Hopefully when it's a bit warmer it will be more amenable to being disentangled.

An hour or so later the car looked a bit better.

Came out looking almost black from this angle.

Bit less moss and such attached now.

Still needs a lot of tidying, but looks a little less neglected at least. Getting some treatment on the plastics will help a lot too.

We did have one grumpy cylinder after the engine bay cleaning, so will check back in on that tomorrow. I did manage to blast the distributor pretty well courtesy of me tripping over the hose. So that might want drying out. HT leads do feel a bit petrified too so I'll probably get a set on the shopping list.

All my cars get their engine bays washed at least once or twice a year. Firstly I hate working on a dirty engine bay. Secondly, if something is going to protest at getting wet I'd far rather it happened on my driveway rather than when I hit some unseen puddle in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night. Yes, that included the V12 Jag. No, water in engine bays is nothing to be afraid of so long as you use some common sense and are confident in doing a bit of gremlin hunting if something does get cranky.

That's looking a lot better Zel!

Agreed so very much so on the need to have a nice clean engine bay... Both mine have and I can work on them (almost) in my best clothes without getting mucky...

Hate dirty things non cars nearly as much as I hate fluid leaks!
