Re: Remember these.? All our yesterdays
Picked this out from the article as being unnecessary updating
The Automobile Association (AA) ran the Aldermaston petrol station, one of several they opened in the 1920s. Before the opening of these stations, there were no specialist filling stations, and fuel was obtained in nine-litre cans from a number of different retail outlets.
2 gallon cans would have done nicely.

Yes the petrol infrastructure was pretty hopeless in the early days, but soon seamlessy evolved to meet demand as will other "fuels" for use in road transport in the 21st century.

That livery would mean nothing to anyone else active on the forum, but pays homage to the Venture Bus Company of Consett Co Durham which in my view has one of the most gorgeous Bus liveries.

Re: Remember these.? All our yesterdays
I used to serve petrol form a pump like the one on the right in that picture, a wind up handle driving a rack, bottom to top and back down for each gallon, nice when the Southport Sand Company's Commer truck came for a fill up.
The pump was in our workshop yard with an arm that swung out over the pavement.

I went to one near Bude in the '50s that had a large circular glass tank above the pump which was marked off in gallons, you pumped the required number up into the tank then put the nozzle in the filler and released the fuel into your car, - novel but not very accurate I would think.

Just a reminder that this thread is here to mop up nostalgia
Here's an old tool making its way out of the bag today, I borrowed it 40 years ago
Gave the pipe making kit back but this somehow stayed with me!
