Egg shells do a good job of deterring snails. Break the shells into small fragments and scatter it around. Another trick is small plastic drinking cups (like the once from dispensing machines) pushed into the soil so their mouths are at ground level, half filled with cheap beer/lager. The smell attracts the slugs and snails, and then they die happily drunk.

There are eggshells there too. And sand, they don't like sand either.

I have a variation of the beer/lager trap as I don't drink it, very rarely anyway.

Yeast dissolved in water in a bean tin/yoghurt pot (big one) does the same as it is the yeast smell that attracts them.

Lightning strike lighting up my patio around 00:20 the other night. I sat there in the dark watching it pressing the button for burst shots at random..

Fly tippers. Idiots!

And a dead baby bird on my walk home, either fallen from a nest or more likely hoiked out by a magpie.
I had loads of ivy and had blackbirds and thrushes nesting in it. Every year the magpies ate the baby birds.

Small advert for the "I-Spy Classic Cars" thread. This is the season for them, pootling about the countryside on drives out, heading for shows, coming back from shows, and the shows themselves.
If you see one, and you have your photographic device with you...head for this thread and post it up. just do the attachments-add files thing on the new post screen.
As a taster spotted this yesterday...

This photograph wasn't taken today, but it was digitised today.

The photograph was taken a couple of decades ago, early on a misty September morning, with my Mothers' narrowboat The Black Cat in the distance. I went for a wander (with my camera), and when I turned round I just HAD to get it on film.

Barley
Barley
Barley growing at the roadside in the middle of a housing estate.
While it was all farmland here, that was long ago and it has been housing since 1973.
Nearest farm now is miles away.
Poppy
Poppy
Nice red poppies at a neighbour's. I meant to swipe some seeds last year and forgot.
Although they won't grow true. They seem to be quite random.
Aquilegia
Aquilegia
Black Aquilegia, self seeded. There were some here a few years ago but vanished. Bought some seeds but they are not showing yet.

Crap photo's. Forgot my glasses so couldn't see what I was doing.
