Definitely a telephone, although the angle of the photo with the fingerpost in the background doesnt show it too well.
Had to look that up Peter, but I see now, didn't know copper nails used as "stump killers" were a thing.

When we were lads one of my mates did that, climbed the tree, one of the nails gave way and he sipped down tearing out his testicles on the nail below, he recovered but from then on was know as 'One ball Baugh',

Only our next door neighbor, a businessman, had a car on the whole of the area we lived in. A neighbour across the street had a van, from the electrical company he worked for, but not all the time.
