Different sized wheels are a distinct possibility.

There is no mention of transmission or suspension taking the DW10BTED4 as an example - both parts are stated as possibilities for the models with electro-hydraulic power steering (which was the only type fitted to this engine). The build date is the key factor it seems as other modifications could of been made as well as wheel sizes that may of been specified as an option - but again, wheel sizes are not stated against the different rack part numbers, only the build dates.

What do you mean with both parts? Same engine with different configurations of transmission/suspension?

The rack dates does not make sense either as I can see racks from 2008, 2009 and 2010 with the same/correct part number so probably not modified in C5's with the same engine?

I mean both steering rack part numbers for both the 180 and 184 racks are listed against the DW10BTED4 engine, RHD.

Ok, so here is my take on it:
Wheel diameterWheel 16"Wheel 17" - 18" - 19"
Special featureLong travelShort travel
Steering rack travel92 mm x 290 mm x 2
I suspect that the other factors to do with the build date part numbers are really only to do with the pitiful 'modification' of the rack - as in adding the Fairy Liquid' type green ring at the pivot base to help prevent water settling. It basically didn't work and the only way to help avoid rusting again is the CV boot modification and copious amounts of marine grease on the pinion, as detailed in my thread here in the earlier posts by myself, Stu and others.

If you therefore have standard 17" wheels and the DW10BTED4 engine, then you will have the 180 degree rack (short travel).

That's helpful thanks. So the 17-18-19 wheel versions would have a rack with the same part number (with everything else being the same)?

A friend recommended these guys
https://www.lionautomotive.co.uk/produc ... ering-rack

Do these numbers give any clue about compatibility? Will call them on Monday

Compatible OE Numbers:
400165
400164

Their return acceptance criteria are interesting.

They are both old numbers & have been superseded by the new numbers shown.

Those numbers come up for 6 different variations of the C5 (X7)

Getting a bit more clear now with old and new numbers.
Can the same rack be used for both short and long travel with some sort of adaptation? Where is the 180 angle measured?
The leak seems to be very small (only a few drops every day using the cardboard under the car method) and I haven't had to top up LDS fluid since I first noticed a spot on the driveway 6 months ago so unless it is considered an MOT fail I will not replace it but will keep a reconditioned rack as a backup.

No, otherwise they wouldn't have produced 2 racks. You'll end up with more issues otherwise.

Do you know where these measurements are taken (180 and 184)?

That's going into the realm of steering geometry, but suffice it to say the racks are designed for the 2 different angles to support different wheel sizes and the related systems. The smaller 16" wheels have the larger steering rack angles (184°) and the 17", 18" & 19" wheels the 180° racks. Search on Ackermann steering principles to find out a bit more.

So we're back to what you stated in 2018 in this very thread.

Although when I repeated this in another thread you disagreed with me.
