Has a couple of informative bits in the "just have a think" mode.

This chart for instance. Not UK, Europe, USA but India and as of now dominated by coal powered power generation and a very different starting point requiring different practical solutions.

Carbon capture and storage is likely to play a role, of course vital in the production of the Blue versions of alternative fuels like H₂, and other e-liquid fuels, e-petrol, e-diesel, e-kerosene and the like.

Bit much having two embeds in one post, but the current state of Carbon Capture and storage schemes are at a very low scale, and add a cost premium to the end-products be that energy generation or "blue" fuels.

SMART meters, everything you wanted to know but were afraid to ask.

Considering it, mainly to get access to cheaper tariffs, and stumbled across this site in my delving. Being a rural area our current supplier good old Spanish (Scottish) Power were a bit dismissive on their automated assessment of fitting a smart meter after tapping in our postcode due to communications difficulties regarding strength of signal. Octopus were more confident.

There are two main types of smart meters – the older models known as SMETS 1 (Smart Meter Equipment Technical Specifications) and the newer versions that were rolled out in 2018, known as SMETS 2.

SMETS2 use in Scotland and the North of England Long-Range Radio communications (LRR) is used by Arqiva Limited in Scotland and the North of England. The LRR system uses infrastructure and technology similar to that already used for other important national communications networks, such as those for emergency services and keeping lifeboat stations connected. Communication towers communicate directly with smart meter Communications Hubs in homes. By 2021 Arqiva Limited will have achieved their contracted coverage of at least 99.5%.

Surely we can't be in the 0.5% wilderness

Looking for something else on the NCC "planning portal", I thought I had come across the name Arqiva somewhere before. A crop of what are described as "Prior Notification of Arqiva Smart Metering Antenna and equipment installations." at various locations.

Undoubtedly if it isn't there already, its surreptitiously coming to a location near you. Once its there and the appropriate meters are installed in enough homes (currently by persuasion, and carrots, but maybe with more stick to come)....the "internet of the energy supply" is going to change and develop in ways we have not even thought of yet.

PS Northumbrian Water Group aren't as wholesomely Northumbrian as it seems, its a subsidiary of CK Infrastructure Holdings or CKI, is the largest publicly listed infrastructure company in Hong Kong.

On the UK front they operate as Essex and Suffolk Water down South.

My water meter is sort of half smart, it's under the kitchen sink but has a cable to the outside front wall and a sensor the meter reader flashes a gadget at to read it.

My water meter is very smart - we don't have one. got our own water supply. Mind you our council tax is well over £300 per month

We had to install a water meter duct and cover when we built our house - they never, ever installed a meter!
