Xantia spare wheel removal tool
Hi
I need to change the spare tyre and realise I cannot find the tool that allows you to "drop" the cage from inside the boot.
It's just a round circle with a groove in the middle?
Are these tools available?
Or
Are they hidden away somewhere on/in the car?

The tool to undo the bolt which lowers the spare wheel cage is simply the flat tab on the end of the wheel brace handle.

I don't have the wheel brace for the xantia, will others fit? like peugeot?

If the threads are rusted it would be difficult to lower the hook part.
Threads are seen if you look from under the rear part. Apply some
rust remover or similar. Let it soak for some time and then try to unscrew the bolt.

just out of interest is the jack in the spare wheel?

If you zoom the pic you'll notice also the wheel brace (one end can be used as opening key), towing bar and jack.
I had my own 2 tons SCISSOR JACK. I used that instead of the cars own set and kept it in the boot, not near spare wheel.

On my older 1995 TD, the scissors jack was originally in the foam box in the spare wheel, although I always carry it in the boot.
However, the wheel brace has always been kept in the boot, retained by a plastic clip just within the boot lip, right hand side as you look at it, so it is readily accessible whenever you want to use it to lower the spare wheel cage (always assuming the thread mechanism isn't rusted up)

I am missing my Xantia spare wheel cage lowering tool. The wheel brace, I believe. My Xantia is an HDI 2000 vintage, first registered in 2001. If anybody has a spare one that I can buy, please let me know. What happens to these tools, as so many owners seem to lose them? Do they go walkabout?

Using that shallow groove is a pain in the whatsit. Get someone to weld a (wheel-size) nut on top of the groove, then you can use your wheelbrace/socket without slipping off.

If im not mistaken a 3/8th's ratchet with a suitably long extension fits into the slot in the head of the retaining bolt, certainly works on the likes of xsara/picasso's.
Music keeps me going.

I really don't like the bolts Citroen decided to use for the Xantia spare wheel carrier. What possessed them to use a slot rather than a 19mm hex ?
I had to change an offside wheel on the hard shoulder of a motorway once, back in the good old days, when motorways had a hard shoulder, rather than the death-trap 4 lane arrangement we have today. Anyway, it wasn't much fun, even without having to deal with a corroded bolt that didn't want to let the spare wheel down.
After that experience, I got rid of the stupid standard bolt and replaced it with one made from stainless steel.
This is slightly less straightforward than one might think, because the thread on the hook is M12 1.5mm pitch, rather than the standard 1.75.
The solution was to buy a pack of very long bolts on eBay, plus an M12 x 1.5 die, cut the ends off and retap them with the required thread.
The head is 19mm across flats, so it fits the normal wheelbrace; the solution Citroen should have adopted.
Picture shows standard bolt, as bought, then a modified one and the original Citroen equivalent below.
If anyone's struggling, I made this wee adapter to unscrew a bolt that was really stuck; yours for the price of the postage for the first requester....
