Re: Electric Vehicles:Batteries
Didn’t realise there was a thread specifically on batteries. Whoops.

Re: Electric Vehicles:Batteries
Here's a nice video from the James and Kate channel covering a cell swap on a 2011 Leaf:
Two hours start to finish to diagnose and repair a battery pack where it appears two cells have suffered from insulation breakdown between the cells and the cell casing.
What a difference having somewhere indoors to work with two people and a hydraulic hoist trolley makes compared to the several days it took me to do the cell swap on the Ion lying on my back by myself on the driveway doing battle with rusty bolts and using threaded bars to lower and raise the pack...

Re: Electric Vehicles:Batteries
Interesting watch that video. Would be interesting if they put it back into the original fault state and took it to one of Nissan's Finest Workshops to fix. Would be surprised if they came out with the same result after 2 hours.
Good advert for the independant specialist EV shop who know what they are doing

Re: Electric Vehicles:Batteries
I saw this on local TV, they have been talking about reopening some of the tin mines for years but the price of it is quite volatile, one reopened a few years back but I think it went bust. Perhaps this might do it?

Would that be clotted lithium

That's got to be good for Cornwall PeterPeter.N. wrote: 30 Nov 2020, 10:46 I saw this on local TV, they have been talking about reopening some of the tin mines for years but the price of it is quite volatile, one reopened a few years back but I think it went bust. Perhaps this might do it?

Let's hope it happens

Re: Electric Vehicles:Batteries
The extraction of lithium in Cornwal is unlikely to be via "Hi Ho Hi Ho its off to work we go" traditional mining but via drilling immensely deep wells and extracting the "brine". Site on an industrial estate in Redruth already in actionCitroJim wrote: 30 Nov 2020, 11:02Would that be clotted lithium![]()

I saw a programme on TV the other day saying that some parts of Cornwall are the most deprived in the UK due to the lack of gainful employ in the area... Cambourne seemed to be particularly hard hit...

Its near Redruth and very near the United Downs Industrial Estate where an important pilot project to extract Lithium from two deep wells drilled many kilometres into the underlying granite rocks is taking place.
Energy Matters Global and Domestic has the tale.

Re: Electric Vehicles:Batteries
When they make the batteries, will there be arguments about whether the Lithium or the jam goes in first?

Stand by for the objectors to come out of the mist, you can't do owt without a protest group forming these days.

Sad but true.. They'll be the ones who own second/holiday homes in Cornwall and have plenty of money to pay outrageous prices well out of the reach of the local population...
Those people often do little to support local economies...

Re: Electric Vehicles:Batteries
When they do appear, could we form an "anti protest group" group?

Realistically, re-opening the tin mines to go after the lithium is likely to cause less pollution than starting new mines with all the spoil they would produce. I believe that going through the spoil tips from the original mines (if they still exist) could also be beneficial, as any rare earth elements could be recovered with (probably) lower pollution and less effort.
