UK fusion experiment used in hunt for clean energy

"A pioneering nuclear fusion experiment based in Oxfordshire has been switched on for the first time.
Mast Upgrade could clear some of the hurdles to delivering clean, limitless energy for the grid.
Fusion differs from fission, the technology used by existing nuclear power plants, because it could release vast amounts of energy with little associated radioactivity."

That's almost what they said about nuclear back in the halcyon days... 'The electricity so produced would be so cheap it would be pointless to meter it...'

It'll be good if fusion finally delivers all it promises, even if it does take 20 years

Watched the piece by Simon Jack BBC Business editor on Sizewell C.

New nuclear plant at Sizewell set for green light

There are many vested interests in Sizewell C the biggest of which are our old friends French State-owned Electricite De France...you might remember them from such things as running the entire UK Nuclear Industry (but not responsible for any decomissioning costs) and construction of Hinkley Point C over in Somerset in conjunction with a Chinese State owned Company CGN designing and building the Plant.

Of course they have learnt so many things in the course of designing and building Hinkley Point C that the model just gets ported over to Suffolk and hey presto in 10 years time we have the first green electricity being pumped into our homes and industry. 20-30 years later time for decommisioning. Not to worry EDF will have made their business model work, and will also be able to make a profit when they and their Chinese partners are the only firm in town who have the ability to decomission their own reactors, and the competitive tender with a list of 1 preferred supplier is won. Still no need to factor that in to the price of electricity for the plants operating years because if they did the whole project would be a non starter.

Anyway I expect it to go ahead, big civil engineering project, construction jobs, economic boost, and we've started so we'll finish, and we might get sued for changing our mind, is likely to be too much to turn back now. One good thing about the inordinate length of time it takes to progress such projects is that it might give time to see if they can make Hinkley C work, before they start in earnest on Sizewell C.

Bloody shame the building of Wylfa B on Anglesey has been scuppered... If ever there was an area of the UK that really needed the economic benefits it would bring it was Anglesey...

Well Monday is big quiz night on tv....Mastermind/Only Connect/University Challenge and more often than not the FCF discussions contribute to unexpected right answers So greek philosophy cropped up on UC tonight and having an tangental delve from Mick's comment into the original cycnics from Ancient Greece, Diogenes and his mates, I came up with Cynicism, as a correct answer to one of the questions tonight.
