Trivia Investigation Team

Case number 1.
Can you dig out any information on this type of telephone box :?: (type/date/original maker etc)
Did a bit of an internet search which I thought would be easy to identify this telephone box (type/date/original maker etc) and could only find one image other than the one I took and posted on "remember these all our yesterdays".

Added to that it just described it as a "sliding door telephone box" probably totally inaccurate it probably had a folding door of some description. Obviously my phone box didnt have the door in situ.

In the nostalgia for the tradition picture postcard box, has the memory of these more moderns been erased :?:

As you know Neil I am off ro Spain today so no opportunity to have a delve. However it might be worth searching "mercury telephone kiosks" which I believe were of a similar type! Good luck!! :)
PS I hope this isn't going to earn us the nickname of TITs :-D

Well that put me on the right track Mick, although I discover its not a Mercury kiosk. Found this pretty comprehensive PDF article written by Nigel Linge and Andy Sutton "Phoneboxes, their rise, fall and rise?" which nailed it down with pictures.

The British company, New World Payphones,was granted its licence to provide public payphones in 1996. They installed the first of their new modern kiosks outside Central St Martins College of Art and Design in Southampton Row, Camden on 27 August,1996. Featuring large glass panels, an inwardly opening bifurcated folding door and pyramid roof, these kiosks were designed and manufactured by MVM as the MVM1000 (Figure 11) and appeared on the streets painted bright red with yellowbanding and telephone logo.

Who's seen the boxes filled with books ?

They are all signed with Phone Books across the top I've seen a couple in 2 villages I drive through there like small library's
Husky. :? Thinking outside of the box is better than sitting in a dark one.

Yes I've seen those. Many are used for Information centres like this one at Branxton, the village next to where the Battle of Flodden took Place. There was also a one on Countryfile Gardeners' World recently which was used as a "seed" exchange for local gardeners.

That's become very common around here too :D And it's an excellent use for them...

One saved a good friend of mine a couple of years ago when he suffered a cardiac arrest whilst running...

I'm fully trained in their use...

The article I linked to earlier drew some of its pictures from the Avoncroft Museum in Worcestershire. I reckon it would be an interesting place to stop off at if you are in the vicinity. Amongst many other things it holds the National Collection of Telephone Kiosks

While plenty of the earlier K series of traditional red boxes will be preserved/repurposed the last of the line of the red boxes, the K8, is being ripped out all over the country and is increasingly rare. 10 points if you spot one and put it on POTD :-D
