Ok, so these are my thoughts:

When the firmware is used to perform a new installation, I believe that a lot of the data is first written to onboard chips in the first stage and then from there to the HDD / CF Card Media.

In this case, it is completing the first part of the installation, but when it comes to the actual writing to the media card it cannot write any data. So this is why when you examine the CF card in Windows you are not finding the partitions - because it cannot write to the media to create them and cannot proceed further, returning the error.

This can be down to the Master / Slave settings of the adaptor interface card, or the actual interface card itself. This is why the PC will be able to write data to it, but not when you use the interface card.

Is your Hard Drive actually knackered or were you just trying to replace it to preserve it?

My HDD is OK but system rebooting more frequently so replacing before it finally dies.
I have refitted the original HDD and the system is back up and working as it should.
The Cf adaptor is defiantly jumpered slave as i was trying to upgrade from CD and if in other position (master) the CD does not read but does when in slave position.
I have been trying to find the original adaptor you used but it looks like is no longer available.

Yes, that's the problem with these adaptors here today, gone tomorrow!

As for the Hard Drive. Typically the restarts are symptomatic of a heat problem. Even with the double DIN sized unit, air circulation can sometimes cause a problem - especially as it is amping the sound too. Thje hard drive should be able to cope with extremes of temperature (automotive grade), but the components themselves are another story.

I've heard others say the restarts are more frequent in warmer months too. I never had the restart issue myself as I always tend to have the cabin colder than most people prefer! But in winter this can become an issue for obvious reasons.

As for the jumper settings, I suggested reversing the jumpers as with these Chinese things - their instructions are not always clear shall we say

I have managed to get it to work.
I was trying to do a clean install but in the end i imaged my drive that did not show up any errors.
I then imaged back to the CF card and after refit the system worked as it did before.
Thanks Marc for all your help.

Great - I'm glad you found a solution - no 2 installs ever seem the same! :-D

Don't forget that now you have the CF card working - it will be much easier to reset to factory defaults from the menu if needed from now on if you want to start from scratch and set up all the settings from new.

Typically the loudness setting always defaults to off, so that needs turning on - and don't forget to UNCHECK the synchronise time with GPS setting - you need this off to cope with the GPS N Week rollover issue.

Are you no-longer getting reboots?
I read somewhere that this is a known problem with the eeprom, with no known fix. :(

Reboots can also be down to a bad hard disk, the SSD (if you have used an SSD to do a conversion instead of a CF card - as they rely on as OS supported TRIM function which is not available on QNX), overheating of the unit, faulty CF card, faulty or incorrect firmware installation or a hardware problem. The EEPROM chip issue is more of a problem on the RT6 and MyWay units than on units with a Hard Drive).

A weak car battery can also cause the unit to loose settings and also if you have put the SHUNT fuse into PARK mode position, that will also switch off additional power consuming equipment and cause the Navidrive to default to default settings as it loses internal backup battery power when it is not being supplied in this mode.

I tried the cf route and the reboots persisted.
The front of my unit does get warm to touch on longer drives. Is there a way to resolve the overheating issue?

The reboots are very quick. No delay in rebooting.

in that case, I would leave the car running, and insert the firmware on USB again and it should ask you if you want to install it. Choose yes and allow it to reinstall. That should correct any errors you may have had if you cloned you old hard drive instead of doing a fresh install.

I have reinstalled the firmware multiple times now. Unfortunately the reboots persist.

Reboots happen around every 30 mins.

In that case, you may have a separate issue then with the motherboard / hardware. It can happen if the unit gets too hot (despite being a double DIN with more internal space fro cooling than other units).

I've seen somewhere that these Harman Becker units can be 're-animated', but information is very poor:

This video shows it can be done with a Martech programming tool, but like all these, they are expensive to buy and there is not much info out there:

Yep I read about the martech tool.
I can’t justify that expense for a relatively crappy satnav system. Guess I will have to live with the reboots.
Thanks anyway 😔
