Quadrophonic swans?

I wanna tell you a story, This ordinary looking end terrace house in Bromley belonged to my aunt in the 1940s. When I first remember her she worked as a cashier in Kennedys fish shop in Bromley high street, why then did she have a baby grand piano in her front room? At the time I didn't think anything of it except that it was a nice toy to play with.

I subsequently learnt that she had been a silent picture pianist in one of the Leicester Square cinema's, which explains the autograph book she left with lots of entries from the old film stars, received at premiers I assume, anyway she was obviously made redundant when the talkies came in, hence the job in the fish shop - a bit of a comedown I would think.

But that's not all (I'm afraid) fast forward to the '60s, my girlfriend, soon to become my wife, worked in a insurance company in London and was telling me about another employee who had a theatre organ built in his house, for any enthusiasts his name was Len Rawle who became famous when he was featured in the John Betjeman film "Metroland" and became a well known organist.

His father was well known for salvaging organs from defunct cinemas as was Len and the organ in his house came from came from one of the Leicester Square cinemas, quite likely the one my aunt used to play in.

A few years ago we met him at a concert at the St Austell Organ club, he remembered my wife and his wife came from Sevenoaks the area we used to live in.

Isn't that interesting? No? delete it then. :?

Looks like ebay sellers are making a few mistakes. I ordered some Duracell Ultra AAAA bateries (for the stylus of my tablet), and received normal Duracell AAAA batteries (but, upon complaining, I got a refund and told to keep them, so that is a bit of a result), while my Mum ordered some sandals and received a baseball cap!

You're not the only ones, I ordered a couple of Brother typewriter ribbons number 1030 for my old friend who's stuck in the 70s, pack arrived this morning, an entirely different ribbon,.

Seller says he can't understand how it got listed as 1030s because he's never had those, the packing slip in the parcel lists 1030 the ones I ordered.

Gave me an immediate refund but hasn't said send it back or keep it. :?

I remember having to decant typewriter ribbons from one spool type to another back in the '70s, when the correct ones weren't to hand.
Silk ribbons for lithographic direct-image plates!
Then came carbon-film ribbons, which produced razor-sharp text from the single-use ones.
Then IBM's Selectric "Golfball", and a correcting (lift-off) version, too, the 82C.
Then early PC's (8088's from Opus), and time for some decent print from Juki's daisy-wheel printers.
(I won't mention Wordcraft or WordPerfect, but pleased to see the back of both.)
And then the breakthrough: the first laser printers. At school, we paid around a grand for a Canon LBP-8 monochrome. So good, we bought a couple more. Today, around £100, or less.

All good fun. Printing: the noble art of putting dirty marks on paper.

The 100,000 view on POTD has been and gone...and good news the counter hasnt overflowed and gone round the clock and started us back at zero again.

and Chris White Exec had the honour of being in the POTD Chair as the 100,000 the viewer gazed upon the rich bounty laid out before them on the thread.

It wasnt me I hasten to add, just got back in and it was registering this....

Well, I didn't see that one coming!
It's turned out to be a terrific thread, open to just about anything from anyone \:D/.
Amazing how sociable and popular this corner of the forum (the Off-Topic forum, POTD...) has become.
A great balance to the nuts, bolts, leaks and unexpected shut-downs we also specialise in.
Well done, everyone.

Mick took us up to 4 Swans

There is a weatherspoon pub in Newcastle called "The Five Swans" in turn named after these
swans in Flight David Wynne, 1968
swans in Flight David Wynne, 1968
and the sculpture was inspired by Hans Hartvig Seedorff Pederson's 'The Swans from the North'

But what is represented by "The 5 Swans from the North" :?:

If you are curious easy to research.

I seem to remember from somewhere that the Bronze Swans represent the Scandinavian nations, Finland, Norway, Sweden and Denmark but I can't think where the fifth one comes from? :?: :)

Bit of research and derrr! the fifth one is Iceland!! I never remember that Iceland is classed as Scandinavian!! :-D
When my daughter was living in Sweden we went to visit her and she took us to see a bronze statue on a fountain plynth which had bronze swans around the base spouting water and I think they had a similar heritage which is probably what rang a bell. Beautiful city with some grim bits!! :-D
