Blown Exhaust Manifold Gasket

When idling my Laguna (1.8 RT,N Reg) sounds as quiet as a 9 year old car should. But when the engine is exelarating or under any sort of load it makes what can only be described as a farting noise that sounds like it's coming from under the bonnet. Could this be a blown exhaust manifold gasket or something else? How would I be able to test it etc.?
