I think the Canadians do sarcasm. David Booth writing for "Driving" certainly does :-D

Electrek have presented their own take on what the C.E.O. of Toyota Canada had to say, but David Booth here presents it in the CEO of Toyota Canada, Larry Hutchinson's own words. Mr Hutchinson presents an evangelical crusade on behalf of the Hybrid, with some interesting tab packet maths to boot.
Toyota's master plan for a low-carbon future
Toyota is the greenest automaker on the planet, and their plan for reducing tailpipe emissions is ambitious

...This will be a Motor Mouth unique in the 20-plus years of Driving. Rather than presenting my view on the most pressing topic affecting the auto industry — the most efficient path to a lower carbon future — I’m going to present the speech (abridged, but mostly verbatim) Larry Hutchinson, president and CEO of Toyota Canada, used to open Toyota’s participation in the 2020 Canadian International Auto Show.

Toyota, if anyone needs reminding, is the industry leader in electrification — 13 million hybrids, and counting — and if you judge environmental-friendliness by how much carbon dioxide has been eliminated from the atmosphere, the greenest automaker in existence. So, without further ado, here is how the biggest, most successful, and most environmentally conscious traditional automaker thinks we can reduce the greenhouse gasses in our atmosphere most quickly.

Someone, please, have a word with the man.
Maybe not bother. Just get on with the legislation and moves towards ICE-free transport.
Advertising standards might have to do their stuff, though, just in case the public (and some gullible others) fall for this rubbish.

I suppose this quote from the recent archives applies to our Toyota Canada CEO, and his company line.....

Its a matter of opinion of course, but Car Makers also seem to enjoy installing functions and facilities well out of the essential of reliable, comfortable and economic A to B Motoring, like the current obsession with autonomous driving capability.

But this little addon patented by Ford ( yes patented so no one else steals their idea :-D ) over in the USA surely takes the biscuit for total unnecessaryness....
Note to Ford....to paraphrase Howard H. Aitken

Who's going to make Australia's cars now?

Not General Motors as they pull out of Australia/New Zealand by 2021, the end of 89 years, and the Holden Brand will be no more.

https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a3098 ... australia/

Of course the Holden's finest hour was this appearance on the FCF Whatsthisthen? thread :-D
Pug_XUD_KeenAmateur wrote: 24 Feb 2019, 13:39 Thanks for that Gibbo, you've actually identified it better than I had.

I'd been barking up the Holden Kingswood route, HQ or HZ series; but no actually it is a Holden Torana. I was a bit surprised to enter the reg on the DVLA site and realise that its got a whopping 4146cc under the bonnet; what a little sleeper it is !

Date of First Registration really ought to read "First UK Registration"

Shades of Vauxhall FE Victor to me, from some angles.

Very similar Holden Torana found online.

Big UK Unicorn!

Post by NewcastleFalcon »

The contribution of UK Unicorns may well be more significant than the contribution of traditional car makers operating in the United Kingdom.

Arrival are a case in point.

Tesla's 2006 "master Plan"
https://www.tesla.com/en_GB/blog/secret ... edirect=no
The first master plan that I wrote 10 years ago is now in the final stages of completion. It wasn't all that complicated and basically consisted of:

1 Create a low volume car, which would necessarily be expensive
2 Use that money to develop a medium volume car at a lower price
3 Use that money to create an affordable, high volume car
And...
4 Provide solar power. No kidding, this has literally been on our website for 10 years.
and in 2016 the Master Plan Part Deux
https://www.tesla.com/en_GB/blog/master ... edirect=no
So, in short, Master Plan, Part Deux is:

1 Create stunning solar roofs with seamlessly integrated battery storage
2 Expand the electric vehicle product line to address all major segments
3 Develop a self-driving capability that is 10X safer than manual via massive fleet learning
4 Enable your car to make money for you when you aren't using it
Today, Tesla addresses two relatively small segments of premium sedans and SUVs. With the Model 3, a future compact SUV and a new kind of pickup truck, we plan to address most of the consumer market."

...... The change....Tesla unlikely to provide the "bargain basement electric car"

A lower cost vehicle than the Model 3 is unlikely to be necessary, because of the third part of the plan described below. ie the self driving capability and sharing "Since most cars are only in use by their owner for 5% to 10% of the day, the fundamental economic utility of a true self-driving car is likely to be several times that of a car which is not.
That was all 4 years ago now, The model 3 has arrived. The integrated non-ownership "summon" a self driving shared car hasn't quite arrived yet, and showrooms, car lots, and carparks are full of ICE cars.

Certainly seems that someone needs to boldly step into the affordable high volume segment.

Maybe TESLA has looked across at the ineptitude of the competition and assessed that a $25,000 TESLA is feasible in 3 Years Time, and possibly altered the position slightly but nothing definite. I presume when you anticipate what TESLA may produce in a price band currently inhabited with the overpriced little VW triplets it could well be a market they will walk into and take over.

Elon Musk doubled down on his goal to make a Tesla that's less expensive than the Model 3

Ford Adds Battery Assembly Facility For Electrified Cars In Spain

Before anyone gets too excited the usual players supply the batteries this occasion being LG Chem, and its a pack assembly facility, and the cars earmarked for the batteries a very disappointing range of hybrids which barely get 30 miles electric only

Ford Kuga PHEV (Ford Escape PHEV in the U.S.)
Kuga Hybrid
Ford S-MAX Hybrid (2021)
Ford Galaxy Hybrid (2021)

Well you can see the writing on the wall for Dagenham's ICE engine plant, but I wouldn't get too carried away with Ford's prospects in Valencia if thats the best they can offer in spite of the investment.

I'm in the docks car park in Valencia at this very moment and there is not an ev or a charging point anywhere I can see!! No much sign of Ford labelled containers either!! :)
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!
I used to ride on two wheels, but now I need all four!

Sadly I didn't recognise the charging point because it has an ICE vehicle belonging to the ferry company, whose car park I'm in, parked in front of it!!! Sometimes I wonder if there's any sense left in some people!!

Valencia only mentioned six times ever on the otcl. Twice in one day today, what were the chances of that happening?

I think Ford, like Toyota, are just going hell-for-leather on ICE, while it remains legal.
Ford are pouring millions into Rivian, who are being clever in offering their powerful and flexible "electric skateboard", on to which anyone can drop a body of their choice. Why do the work, when someone else is years ahead of you? (You can always buy them later.)

The huge order from Amazon for Rivian delivery vans this year and next is in place.

We're getting rather a lot of marketing cr*p from hybrid manufacturers, who are happy to confuse the public with headline-grabbing figures - witness Vauxhall's 300hp+204mpg last week, and the continued claims of being "self-charging". A good few buyers of cars discovered the lack of a spare wheel the hard way, and I'm guessing a good few will find out the hard way too about battery range and mpg. But it's clever - the car still keeps running, even if you never plug it in. (Just don't try claiming on battery warranty, though.) Keeps just far enough away from snake oil to avoid prosecution - for now. Watch the space, though.
