When you spot something like this you just have to get the camera out. Unfortunately mine has gone kaput, so I had to persuade my youngest daughter to take one with her I-phone. Luckily she is quite used to my foibles so wasn't entirely surprised by my request, having previously snapped a The Renault 4GTl in a traffic jam, and the nice 3-wheeler.

Anyone familiar with this? Not in its first flush of youth, but still quite an eye-catching piece of architecture. Pretty remarkable that no vehicles at all were passing at the time so its definitely not the M25



Surprisingly its not from the set of "The Jetsons"

Correct Steve, quite an iconic structure....

The services is notable for an unusual hexagonal concrete tower on the northbound side, named The Pennine Tower, which originally housed an up-market restaurant and a sun deck. The tower was designed to resemble an Air Traffic Control Tower and is a prominent local landmark. The tower closed to the public in 1989 due to current Fire Regulations (there is no means of providing an alternative exit from the restaurant deck in an emergency), and is only used for storage and occasional staff training. The original pentagon-shaped elevators which served the tower are still used to service the ground floor and first floor of the building."
The Tower was listed Grade II on 15th October 2012.

I stopped there for a while on my way home from a meeting in Blackpool, probably about ten years ago.
Was going to hang around in the lakes for a couple of days but there was a deluge of biblical proportions going on so skipped that.

A Bagatelle Board, and a family tradition of writing your name on the back if you score 1000. First name was in 1937. New name added today in 2020 for a score of 1050...the tradition continues today even though the board shows its patina for its years of use, a simple game still brings pleasure to the new generation.

We had one identical! Used a smaller version of a snooker cue to propel the steel balls. Sadly long gone, though we do have a shove-ha'penny board and brass discs from a similar period.

Devastation wrought by recent storms:

Serious flooding on my walk today.

I found it necessary to walk on the grass. Good job no-one was looking.

They are actually working on 'flood defences' just up the street. There have been loads of JCBs and lorries taking stuff away then bringing more stuff back. Been going on for a month now with not much to show for it.

Looks like water emerging from the ground.

It did rain a lot last night and when it does our street turns into a bit of a river. Since all the preventative work it seems to be much worse.

A few years ago some neighbours, including my daughter, had to open their back and front doors for the water to flow through the house. That hasn't repeated itself, mostly as I waterproofed her garden doors. On one occasion the water was 3' up the glass doors, with snails going up them to escape drowning.

It isn't really a flood area, quite high ground really, just former farmland that the contractors have failed to install adequate drainage.
(It were all fields around 'ere when I were a lad)!

I lent a mate of mine my petrol powered water pump, mains powered water pump, delivery hoses, waders and anything else I could think of on Friday as he lives near a flood prone area. The water level got high, but not high enough to break out the 'tools'. It doesn't help that about half the street drains are blocked around here so you just end up with torrents flowing down the road to the lowest point.... and he lives at the lowest point
