I find it very distracting at night, I have lowered the illumination to the lowest level but it still bother's me. Can't find anything in the handbook - unless I have missed it, par for the course.

Unless you're actually using the maps why not put the radio screen up? Repeated presses of the button at the end of the RH stalk (wiper) will cycle through the three options.

I wonder if you have the ability (within the SatNav software) to get it to switch between a day and night display. On mine (which is an app on a mobile phone) it will have the background in white during the day, and black at night.

You have the RT4 system, but I can't recall this having a night / day mode for the map display which the later models did, but either way, put your illumination back to the levels you want and activate the Black Panel function.
Press Button (10) on the diagram (at night time or you won't see anything). There are several modes - just cycle through them. First press will cut the dash lighting and instruments and if memory serves pressing again cuts lights to everything except the speedo - but if you press on a control anywhere on the steering wheel (say volume or station search), it temporarily illuminates the Telematics unit again, then reverts back to the previous mode. Pressing again returns full dash lighting. I know on my later Navidrive, that if navigation is active, and I have the Black Panel active, the coloured dot matrix display on the instrument panel will illuminate with the next road turn.

The RT4 does have a dark button on the left directional pad on the front of the unit. A bit hard to press when driving though!

Thanks once again Marc and ED and Paul. I don't think I could run these cars without your help. Never noticed that button or did and didn't know what it was for - like many others.
