Watched a video about the nissan leaf battery pack being disassembled, and was surprised to see what was actually inside of the 48 "sardine can" modules, when the youtuber sliced one open with a can opener...literally

I half expected to see a collection of "little" conventional looking batteries inside the tin but no.....this

Looks like a bunch of envelopes inside plastic pockets. There are 4 separate "cells" in the bundle.

Now inside the steel tube of a Panasonic 18650 Cell widely used in TESLA battery packs there is a curled up matrix of layers bundled up inside a small tube, rather than being laid out in a large sheet within a sardine tin.

By the time that arrives who knows Li-ion may be obsolete.

So who is going to build the first of the UK's battery gigafactories? Ever Ready, Crompton Parkinson, the traditional car makers.......none of which are british owned, the Chinese, South Koreans or is someone going to roll the red carpet out for TESLA, or maybe Nissan will rise from their complacent slumbers and build on what they already do at Sunderland, or just let that wither away and retreat back to Japan.

Its better to be optimistic and positive, and some major shift is required to kick start....er this is the modern world...electric charge the new industries. I do not see an automotive company currently producing vehicles in the UK who will take the lead in this, with their parent companies with loyalties elsewhere.

As if to prove my point here's the first line of the article posted by Simon re PSA

So thats Opel and mainstream PSA covered.....and a big chunk of "European combined state aid" from the EU for the €5 billion investment, supported by nearly €1.3 billion in public funding from the European Union.
Yes and the French State still have their stake in PSA.

TESLA to buy batteries from CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL), China’s largest EV battery-maker) for China Market

Tesla dont "make" their own battery cells, but partner with Panasonic to secure supply of the cells. "Tesla, said during last week’s earnings call that its agreements with LG Chem and CATL were of a smaller scale than the existing Panasonic partnership."

There are some strange bedfellows in the globalisation of business.

Nissan's battery supplier is building its first factory in China. So who is Nissan's Battery Supplier....I thought it was.....Nissan....after all it has a battery factory in Sunderland.

Not so...Nissan decided to get out of the battery making offshoot Automotive Energy Supply Company, and sold it to Chinese renewable Group Envision.

So as well as Northumbrian Water being owned by the Chinese, even something as wholesome and British as the UK's only EV batterymaking factory in Sunderland is 100% owned by the Chinese.
