The VX4/90 looks particularly luxurious in its blue ambla in the brochures. Still ICI got their paycheck from the autoindustry whether they used Vynide, or Ambla, or....vynair, vulkide, splendex, vyweld, or Novon....

Certainly remember the series, never missed a single one although I remember little of them.
Unusually I did think the other day of a patient who was full of rage as he couldn't hold or manipulate things properly and often dropped things.
He had injured his hand and the surgeon had connected the nerves for his fingers incorrectly, leading to his condition.


No idea where that came from.

Pretty sure that garage is still there (even survived being a Chevy/Cadillac dealer for a while).

An uncle had a fawn 101, his 1st new car, a (somewhat bizarre, I thought) replacement for an ivory/turquoise Mk2 Zodiac - apart from 4 doors, 4 13" wheels & a column change, they had absolutely nothing in common!

Yes, nowadays they have fairly jazzed up the whole "Antiques" pastime, and launched it into a daytime early evening TV staple with its own set of minor celebrities. But this passed for entertainment in times gone by.

Only the BBC could have produced this, and plums were compulsorily handed to out to all participants to ensure the appropriate manner of speech. (Saying that old Arthur Negus got a bit of West Country in for a small amount of balance!)

R.G.D. was established in 1929 and were amongst the early television manufacturers, producing expensive up-market sets. They were taken over by Regentone in 1952 but the R.G.D. brand name continued, finally being aquired (along with the Regentone brand) by STC (Kolster Brandes) in the early halfe if the 1960s.

When did you last get one of these? A Postcard

I have one regular postcard-sender, and they are great! Always enjoy getting them, and added to the various quirky pictures, there is always a "different take" in the message.

This one landed on the mat this morning.

So much in it. The image itself is a lovely bit of photography. The scene is Tenby South Wales, and that is the Pembrokeshire Ice Cream Company with its 6-wheel, I do believe, something like a range rover.

The photographer is Martin Parr one of "heros" of my postcard sender.

I'm going to look at his other stuff on the net.

All this from a good old fashioned postcard....

I came across this. Never heard of the firm, but one of the pioneers the out of town superstore in 1964 down Nottingham way. Opened by a "Bond girl" Shirley Eaton on November 7, 1964.

Barry Cade's "Tricks of the trade" from Car Mechanics...….was it ever called Barry Cade's Garage Casebook?

100 Points for anyone with an old tatty 1970's or 80's Car Mechanics Magazine who can supply an image of the said "Barry Cade's Tricks of the Trade" column.

Meanwhile here's some useful information (usefulness is always in the eye of the beholder!)

anyway, it appears that Barry Cade was in fact a fictional character, who didn't own a garage, even though he had his mugshot on every column! That's if the internet is to be believed.

"Lets start with a quick question! "How many people remember, or have heard of, Barry Cade's Tricks of the Trade?"

Barry Cade was portrayed as a garage owner / mechanic and appeared in car magazines from the middle 60's onwards. Each month he published a trick of the trade, or tip if you prefer. In fact Barry Cade wasn't a garage owner, nor did he exist in real life. "Barry Cade" was the pseudonym of the Motoring Journalist and Author Jonathon Wood. As a matter of interest the sketch (or Avatar as we might call it today) of Barry at the top of each article was a fairly accurate portrayal of Jonathon.

Jonathon used to drink in the "Bear and Ragged Staff" Public House in Farnam, Surrey. I got to know him because one night a month the Bear and Ragged Staff hosted a meeting for local classic car enthusiasts. Jonathon used to pick our brains at these meetings and quite often what was discussed ended up as a trick of the trade topic, and I am pleased to say that my suggestions were put into print on a number of occasions.

I last met with Jonathon in early 1973 and he was still writing the Tricks of the Trade column at that time. A decade or so later the series was still running, in Car Mechanics Magazine from memory, but I don't think that Jonathon wrote those later articles as they definitely didn't appear to be in his earlier writing style.
