Scrapyards & Scrapyard purchases.
..ain't what they used to be! but I did get what I wanted ...gratis too!
Had occasion to visit Thomsons at Gala today......needed a single caliper bolt.
Number 1...The general Public aren't allowed to set foot in the scrapyard.
Number 2...This particular scrapyard was full of what I would call newer cars, and empty of my vintage of vehicle ie 2000, 18 years old.
Number 3 The cars were either stacked safely on racking or parked up row on row in a "car park" type arrangement
Number 4. The site was devoid of the usual mire of oily mud and broken glass (the bit I could see anyway)
I do have my own go to scrapyard which is more old-style, and avoids in the main the 3-car impossible to get stuff off stacks.
Been to a scrappy recently? I think quite a few of the old style ones I knew in my youth have gone.
Regards Neil

Re: Scrapyards....
I've only seen one like that in Ireland but I suspect the one I pass on the A303 - but can't see into - is like that.
Unfortunately, there are none left near me in London any more (environmental health, health & safety AND - property developers saw to that); there used to be 3 in Lewisham alone. In fact, if it wasn't for this forum I wouldn't have know there were any left at all.

Re: Scrapyards....
There is a decent scrap yard near Wokingham. You can wander around, and the cars are stacked on frames four high (no climbing up the frames, but they have several fork lift trucks and work frames, so they can bring a car to ground level or onto a work frame so you can get to parts underneath). They also have decent prices.

They filmed a few episodes of "Scrapheap Challenge" there, when it was Robert Llewellyn presenting.

Re: Scrapyards....
There is one left that I know of down here, its near Beaminster, that still has lots of old cars and a fairly laid back attitude. There is another one even nearer at Pilsdon, run by a chap my son went to school with but he is more upmarket.
For many years I went to Brian Richards near Bridport, that was an amazing place, about 30 acres of cars and other scrap, I had an arrangement with him, I rented him a TV for free and helped myself to what I wanted, unless it was a car of course.
They were the days, you could take a pick-nick and spend the day there. A friend of mine from Holland used to sent most of his holiday down there, even found a radiator grill for his pre war Citroen.

Re: Scrapyards....
What happened to the scrapyard that was basically a semi-derelict stately home with hundreds of rusting cars parked across its lawns. It was somewhere in the west country - was it your Bridport one, Peter ?

I don't think so, its now a posh housing estate. It was at Netherbury, The original 'River cottage' series was filmed practically next door, the river flowed on to Slape Mill which was a flax mill until the '60s and powered a turbine which generated electricity for the place. The main Victorian factory building was converted into flats I believe when the estate was built.
I had to laugh when news of the estate being built reached the papers, there was great excitement about the water turbine that they found while developing it - I knew it was there in the '70's.

Re: Scrapyards....
I've done a bit of digging - it was / is Blackborough House
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackborough_House
From wikipedia: "By 2011 the house was semi-derelict and had long been surrounded by a car scrap yard, owned since about 1995 by Ralph Sanders, an amateur racing driver, who operated a car spare-parts business and was said to have old racing cars parked inside the house."

The house has been for sale relatively recently : https://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-fo ... 46428.html

Ah yes, I know someone who used to live there, they've moved to France now. I was told about that place many years ago but I couldn't find it although its not very far from here. Pity we didn't have Google Earth back then.

Re: Scrapyards....
There is one in our village, you can wonder around and everything is reasonably priced, there is also a collection of 3 or 4 on one industrial estate area, all old school yards, one still in through the office job, yard on a significant slope too, not so easy getting back into the office with anything large!
good spread of cars, mostly late 90s and early 00s, all of them with gravly, glassy oily muddy stuff all over!
they smell like a scrap yard should too!
