Nice old Matchless!

Gotta say I was looking for the oil leak though! :-D

My old 3TA in 1972 had completely perfected the automatic oilchange process!

But, rather confusingly, "the first public railway opened in England was in fact horse-drawn. This was the Surrey Iron Railway, which ran from Wandsworth to Croydon. It was a narrow gauge railway (only 4ft 2in wide) and was opened in 1803 to carry goods from the growing number of factories that appeared during the 19th century."

The S&DR was the first to use steam locos however :)

Half expected a challenge to my outrageous claim!

Not the S&Darlington Railway though...The Tanfield Railway still in use today, literally.

There's also an obscure claim - which I can't trace at the moment - that has evidence that a railway serving some of the Surrey stone mines pre-dates the S&DR and the Surrey Iron Railway.

I think they can all be winners if you start qualifying their titles...

Oldest railway.
Oldest public railway
Oldest steam railway
Oldest public steam railway
Oldest railway still in use
....and on it goes

...and I was recently at what is apparently the smallest Railway Station in the country, Damems in Yorkshire on the K&WVR.

Close to the National Carriage Museum and also to Brighouse of "Brighouse & Rastrick" fame; a rather larger town than I'd expected.

Had a similarly beautiful sunrise to the one posted on the previous page at Bamburgh Castle, beautiful spot! If you thought Lindisfarne was something special, you've not visited Bamburgh.

Nice pic of Bamburgh Castle on my post here. "Furriegurrie" one of the FCF members was planning a trip to the UK from the Netherlands, so I advised him to avoid "the South" and get the ferry to North Shields, and gave him a bit of a sell of Northumberland :-D

Another claimant for the first railway in Britain is the Crab & Winkle Line - also known as the Canterbury and Whitstable Railway. They do claim the slightly less hotly contested title of issuing the world's first season ticket though :-D

....and yet another staking a claim to the title:
"The Swansea and Mumbles Railway was the world's first passenger railway service, located in Swansea, Wales, United Kingdom."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swansea_a ... es_Railway

....although if their actual claim is that it was the first passenger railway service located in Swansea, then I dare say the competition was a little limited

Couple of pix of a gorgeous little Renault at Castle Combe. Any suggestions on the Model welcomed, I had a look for a 'number' or name, but found none.
