I advice again please! Gearbox oil

Hi, is the info below correct for a C5 2.0 Hdi manual 5 speed box, particularly the capacity?

Manual gearbox
The engines are coupled with an ML5T manual gearbox with gear ratios to suit the type of engine and vehicle characteristics.
The gear change mechanism is cable driven to reduce vibration, and driving comfort is further increased by a specially designed synchromesh lubrication system. The gearbox is lubricated for life (capacity 1.8 litres). Total BV 75W – 80W gearbox oil is recommended.

That looks correct to me. Check out GSF for their prices, they usually are very good.

That's correct.
Use Total Transmission 8 gear oil, which is 75W-80, and importantly GL-4.
PSA manual boxes work superbly on this, and is the recommended oil across the range.
Can be had from any Cit/Peu spares counter, if not available elsewhere.
Don't use a GL-5 oil.

So, what is the difference between api gl4 and api gl4+ ?

In a nutshell, GL5 has additional anti-friction additives. These can interfere with the action of the sychromesh on some manual boxes, resulting in baulky changes, and can also attack copper- and brass-based components in the box. For this reason, where GL4 is specified, it should be used.

GL5 does not supersede GL4, which some suppliers might claim. There are also some GL4/5 oils about, which contain levels of additive between the two. Best not to risk these, when the pukka stuff is available.

Good few articles on the web about GL4 and GL5 specs and suitability.

My local Citroen workshop had a 200-litre drum of Total Transmission 8, which they use for all manual box filling. They were happy to decant me 5-litres of it.

I have some gear oil here that says API GL-4, GL5. (NAPA) HD 75W-80.
Would that be ok to use in my 2005 5-speed manual 2.0 hdi Citroën C8?

That is a prime example of what they do, claiming it is backwards compatible.....so I for one would NOT use it.

I would also recommend sticking with the original GL4 specification. The PSA gearbox has a reputation of being fussy about oil additives.

Hi everyone, just to add to my comment last year, I have just changed the gearbox oil like an hiur ago. Everyone.on here says capacity is 1.8 Litres - BUt I have just drained out approx 2.7 litres!
I bought 2 Litres of COMMA 75/80 GL-4 specially for PSA boxes for just £17 from GSF.
I am a bit confused as to why there was over 2½ litres in there. My original C8 hdi handbook says gearbox capacity is 2L.
SO, my question is - is everyone sure it's 1.8L - 2L for this box? Before I go driving it! Thankyou, David.

Total fluid finder for that car suggests there are two versions of ML6C gearbox fitted: 'with cooling fins' (1.9 litres without overhaul) and; 'without cooling fins' (2.6 litres without overhaul).

Edit: Just noticed you mentioned ML6C.in your reply, on further research, this is the 6 speed box? Mine is a "5 speed" hence I think I have the ML5C box! And online 'ManualsLib.com' states 1.9L as a capacity for the ML5C box fitted to the C8 2.0hdi 110 16v exclusive 2005 (my car). Not aure if the ML5C has a cooling fins variant?
So 2.7L of oil came out of this box but I have put approx 1.9L of new oil back in.
Not sure if the 800ml overfill was a problem (if indeed it was an overfill that is?) But if so, any excessive amounts would just get splurged out of the breather would it not? Before it blew a seal. Thanks again

OH and - it WRONGLY states that this is an AUTO on the V5, but it's most definitely a 5 speed manual! (Weird !?)

There is I think a level plug on the rear of the transmission, if you want to check the level.

Overfilling is not a great idea.
