Re: The Pickled Egg Library
Following on from the screening of "Heroes of Telemark" yesterday there is plenty of reading around the subject, including the Scottish Connection with the training sites in the Cairngorms, and the ill fated glider missions departing from Wick.

Re: The Pickled Egg Library
I bought, as Christmas presents for several people, "Do It Yourself Brain Surgery and Other Home Skills". Very silly and amusing. I like the pre-requisites for some of the 'tasks'. For "Convert Your Home to a Romantic Ruin" you will need the following;
A House,
A good supply of water,
A shovel,
100,000 termites,
6 breeding pairs of bats,
Several large tents,
Somewhere else to live.
For "An Ocean Liner of your own";
A 60ft gantry crane
At least two hammers,
A wheelbarrow,
Lots of room.

Re: The Pickled Egg Library
I looked at that as a potential Christma presents, but Christmas presents were vetoed this year, maybe next

Excellent! I remember reading that when it was first aired on the BBC News website...

Re: The Pickled Egg Library
Don't know if its any good but this sprang from Jim's picture of the Stewartby Chimneys of the London Brick Company over on POTD.

Yes the famous London Fletton brick made from Clay with an organic content from seaweed which facilitates the firing without additional fuel being required.
At £6.74 worth a punt putting it in the Pickled Egg Library for the amusement of the punters who thirst for knowledge as much as Lattes and beer in the snug!
Regards Neil

Re: The Pickled Egg Library
Wow
I must get that...
Especially as I've lived all my adult life around a large concentration of brickworks in and around the Marston Vale...
All were London Brick Company works and made Flettons of varying quality - often very poor...
Only today I've popped up a picture of my most local one near Bletchley in the All Our Yesterdays thread...

Re: The Pickled Egg Library
Whilst clearing out the loft back at the old house, I came across this old supplement from the October 1993 edition of Your Classic Magazine. I shall deposit it in the P.E. Library as it'll do for a quick read whilst I wait for the barman to put a new barrel on tap

Excellent stuff! Those 1993 crystal ball gazers may have been surprised if they had time-travelled to SWVA in 2017

Re: The Pickled Egg Library
My latest bedtime read
Hugely entertaining and a real insight into one of our top sprint cyclists...
And one cyclist who's certainly 'clean' and totally free of scandal...
You don't need to have any interest in cycling or cycle racing to thoroughly enjoy this book...
I got mine for £1.50 in a Charity Shop and in hardback too

Re: The Pickled Egg Library
Following on from the POTD image of the Concrete Reservoir this goes into a bit more detail. Probably about a couple of Latte's worth of browsing in the Snug!
When hydro-electric power was installed to drive the machinery of two mills on the banks of the River Tweed in Peeblesshire, an ingenious system was devised to store up power while the mills were not working.

This one just has to be in the PE library
My childhood (and adulthood) hero!
I've just ordered it - a steal at a fiver from Postscript Books
