Has it got something to do with Aldermaston of RAF Station and nuclear power plant fame! (although the tree looks more oak-like than alder-like.)

Nope - nothing so tortuous. You just need to have a very close look at the trunk, and know what a Zero Station was used for

And yes - it's an Oak. Here's another view of the same trunk

50 points to the man

It's from the Shipley (West Sussex) Zero Station for the Auxiliary Units. The tree is close by to the (now collapsed) underground hideout and, indeed, the scar is where the aerial wire was secreted beneath the bark. Although I've got photos from in there, they don't really show much as it was difficult to get a wide enough shot to show any great value. Below, however, is a photo of an entrance to a different Sussex Aux Unit site. The entrance isn't much larger than a fox hole - and yes, I did go all the way in

And I think this is at the end of that entrance, although my cataloguing isn't what it should be, so it may have been a different one of the Sussex Aux Units.

PS Of course the Queen was never going to turn up at 1.30 am, so the "Official Opening" by the Queen is on 4th Sept.

I love the drawn illustrations on the covers of magazines from the days before photographs were used...
