Well, the time has come to bring this story to an end. Some of you will be sad to hear that, I'm sure. I have made the decision to sell Crapaud on to someone else to enjoy. I've spent a long time fighting with the various problems and have admitted defeat with this running issue because the project has got to that point.
This is not up for debate, the car is up for sale, and I have no desire to do anything more with it. I've saved it from the crusher, so I consider my work here done. The new owner can benefit from all the lovely new things I've done and, potentially, an easy fix if they know the engine well enough and have the patience to pull it out one more time if required. I'm not longer the person to do this work. I would rather part with the car at a point I'm comfortable to do so than when I've lost my temper and patience with it.
It is a relief to have made the decision and I'm sure it's the right one for me and for the car. I believe I've done enough to give it a future with a new owner and that's really the best I can do. I would rather turn my attention to my other projects and who knows, perhaps something French shaped will come my way again? I wouldn't mind another BX some day, for example... not yet though.
I'm asking £600 ono, which seems fair for what the car is and what's been done, especially considering it's VED exempt now. Buyer to collect, obviously, since it can't be driven anywhere. Located in TS17. For more info or to arrange a viewing, please reply here or send me a message through the website. I'm not on Facebook and I prefer not to use the phone, so those methods of contact won't work for this sale.

A real shame, but I can fully understand - very similar to where I am with the Skoda I think. Just one problem too many has popped up and you start to run out of patience.

I doubt it'll be a quick sale, you'd have to really want this particular car. We shall have to wait and see what happens. There's been a surprisingly positive and supportive response to me selling the car, on the whole. I put a whole raft of new pictures in the sale advert yesterday and to really sweeten the deal, TIME TOAD is included in the asking price!

I sympathise with you decision to sell, but if you get the urge to turn it over one more time, try swapping the plug leads of cylinders 3 and 4, in case the firsing order (or reference cylinder) is different from that which you have assumed. It can't run any worse.

As already stated, I'm not going to investigate further and it's up to the new owner to try out such suggestions. I'm fairly certain it's not the plug lead order, that particular aspect has been gone over so many times with so many combinations attempted to no improvement I'm as sure as I can be that they're correct. I suspect the issue is more likely the camshaft being 180 degrees out causing the engine to fire on the wrong stroke and that's an engine out job to resolve because of the stupid way Renault made these cars.

Sure you'd have no compression if the cam was timed up on BDC... If it were 180 crank degrees out that is...
If it was 180 degrees at the cam thatd make it 360 out in crank degrees and thus would be simply a case of switching the dizzy 180 to make it run :/

...and here you see my problem. I don't understand it and I have no desire to investigate further. It's going to be a simple fix for someone else. It's beyond my ability to understand or, seemingly, explain adequately. Whenever a suggestion is made I explain what I've done and normally the response is along the lines of "well that should be okay, you must have done something else wrong". So... yeah. I've been fighting with it for a while and getting nowhere so it's time for me to stop.

That's understood very clearly.. In my past professional life as a radio engineer some faults just defied logic and the more you looked at trying to find the solution the worse it got.
Only thing to do in such circumstances was to put the offending unit on a shelf, forget about it, let it get dusty and then months or weeks later take a fresh look at it... Often, after blowing the dust away the unit would be up and working in minutes...
Same applies to the problem you have...

When things get like that for me i have to walk away for my own sanity. And the more folk say try this or try that the worse it gets for me. Yes, its a shame you did not get it going but if its reached that stage then its completly the right descision to let it go. You have done a lot of the hard work and be happy with that.

Just a quick thought on the back fire. A friend had a SIII Landy that did the same thing, it would just about start then spit fire from the carb until it cut out. He said he'd changed nothing, it just started to happen. He probably meant that he changed something and forgot because he felt it was unrelated to the problem. I don't know if he fixed it, but I do know that if he partially covered the carb intake with his hand it would run fine. The choking by hand was more 'adjustable/sensitive' than using the choke butterfly.
