Yes spot on James, the original advert displaying a bottle of the chemical responsible for the "tingling" probably wouldn't sell too many tubes today :-D

Another pic from the "this day in past years" explore facility on Geograph caught my eye...

The larger than life-size statue of Betjeman depicts him walking into the new station as if for the first time. He is looking up at the great arc of the train shed - which he always did because it took his breath away. He is leaning back and holding onto his hat, his coat tails billowing out behind him, caught by the wind from a passing train.

Pretty easy to track down where it was taken, but I wonder how many of the commuters, tourists and travellers make the time to have a gaze and appreciate that train-shed roof.

Not quite sadly, his statue has been the subject of some discussion in railway enthusiast circles... It's not seen as being well paced but the biggest argument as been the deletion of the Mallard Duck that was to be at his feet...

There is a video on YouTube of Michael Palin introducing Sir John Betjeman's film "The Branch Line". Two of the most English of Englishmen.

I'm a great fan of John Betjeman. Worth searching out include the "Metroland" film/DVD, the CD "Banana Blush" with his poems set to the music of Jim Parker, and many of the short films he did with the BBC. YouTube has lots of these.

Just staking a claim for the 1,000 reply to the Pictures of the Day thread....but I haven't actually got anything in mind yet so I'll very probably have to edit it in later!

Regards Neil

Put "1000" in the search box on Geograph....5 million images get scanned, and up pops your image list. Choose one you like, and what have you got a picture for the 1000th reply on "Pictures of the Day"

here it is "James the Red Engine" on a visit to Bo'ness!

I think that Chris managed it with the picture of Sir John Betjemen in the Harrods lorry. This post is 1003.

You are quite right, but this is 1,004th post but only the 1,003rd reply!

So yes I have "reserved" the 1,000th reply but it is/was the 1,001th post!

Regards Neil

PS why has the marketing phrase "1,001 cleans a big big carpet for less than half a crown" stayed with me all these years :-D

Because it's become a true classic of advertising like Double Diamond's 'I'm only here for the beer' and several others..

Such as the Esso Blue Paraffin adverts...

Showing my age again now
