The four rings represent the original four marques which formed the Auto-Union namely Audi, Horsch, DKW and Wanderer. NSU tagged along much later when they were acquired by Volkswagen., and the NSU name name pretty much disappeared with the RO 80.

Maybe unlikely to make a return as a car brand in the internet age. Google "NSU" and you get non-specific urethritis.....not a pleasant thing but you can get antibiotics for it :)

Thanks Neil, good to know the history :)

Maybe NSU in Germany doesn't have the same connotations?

Todays classic spot....the old red one....neatly contrasting with the new white one.

I prefer the red!

....the little notice in the windscreen made interesting reading.....
Compared to a modern car, the E-Type takes a bit of getting used to- there is no power steering, the turning circle is poor, the brakes are assisted but you will think they are not, you can't see the end 4 foot of the bonnet, it is noisy, draughty, and smells of petrol and old leather, has no electric windows or central locking, you have to slam the doors to make sure they are closed, and carry your breakdown card. BUT it is drop-dead gorgeous and costs less than a lot of modern cars (although prices are rising again!)

I never had the opportunity untl 2004 of realising my dream of owning an E-Type until 2004-I found this car on EBay. Its never going to win a prize at a car show but it is my pride and joy and makes me smile every time I sit in it.
.......yes given a choice between the white and the red, its most definitely the red.....although the purist would get it into a paint shop pronto, scrape off the Ferrari-red paint and reinstall the original pale primrose yellow!

....but as far as colours for E-types go, pale primrose isn't one of my favourites

I had a mate back in the fifties who had been a welding inspector during the war, it had damaged his eyes and made him colour blind, the only colour he was happy with was primrose yellow, even wanted me to paint my vintage Rolls yellow. :)

I ignored him and painted it in a majestic maroon.

When I sold it to a guy in San Francisco he immediately repainted it midnight blue.

The E type was responsible for quite a few deaths of people who could afford it but not suitably skilled to drive it.

Driven, just once, mercifully (c.1969) from mid-Cheshire to Manchester, along the main A-road, in a 4.2 - by just one of those individuals. It was obvious that (a) the car had inherently poor handling, and (b) said alpha-male had more money than driving sense, although the E-type wasn't exactly pricey. A few weeks later, said wally set fire to his Cheshire mansion, with wife still inside it. :-s

At South Queensferry yesterday; this a 3 part post...

Post 1 is here: http://www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/v ... &start=399

There was a car rally going on with a run out from Linlithgow (about 20 miles away). There were more cars later, but only got this pic:

There were a couple of 2CVs, didn't get a pic of the other one..

Well from right to left, on the right end is a Rover P4, in the middle I would guess a Morris Eight from the 1930's, and the right is definitely an Austin....A40 upwards, but which County it is I dont know. We could have Devon/Dorset, Somerset, Hampshire, Hereford. I would plump for a Somerset if pushed.

Reckon I have one of the three right anyway!

Definitely an Austin A40 Somerset but I don't think the middle one is a Ford or a Morris, it looks more like a Singer Bantam 9 to me.

The distinctive bit is the air vent/grille on the side.

Here's a Morris Eight to compare

....and a Singer Bantam 9

Similar shape but I would still plump for a Morris Eight.

I think we're both wrong Neil, note the flattish roof on the specimen and the rounded roof on the others also the shape of the windscreens is different.
Must get my head scratching going as to what else it could be, Standard maybe.......................

Enlarged the image and I think it's a Ford Y model, at first I was thinking all Ford 8s of that time had a dip in the front bumper to permit use of the starting handle but then I recalled they made one with a shorter radiator and straight bumper, the starting handle hole was below the bumper.
I think it's one of those from around 1931ish
