What do you know about Norfolk?

Post by NewcastleFalcon »

.....well let's give this one a go......ulterior motive of course.....may bring out some AA box spotters :!:

So at the risk of killing the thread before it gets going...here's my starter for 10. I'll leave the curious to discover the back story. Suffice to say it's cheaper than the car, but not much.

Norfolk is the home of Anglia Car Auctions Kings Lynn which regularly hold classic car sales next one coming up on Saturday 27th August including amongst other lots this Citroen HY Camper, 1900 Diesel engine, MOT to June 2017

Estimate £5,000 to £6,000.

Now these aren't standard issue HY Seats so the purists will be breaking out in a cold sweat, but the standard seats look the most uncomfortable known to man. It can't be that bad structurally if it has a fairly recent MOT, and I have seen many worse looking examples at far greater prices.

Norfolk is not as rural and quiet as we are led to believe, you have to pay to park everywhere, not a patch on the far north of Scotland.

I like a bit of plain advertising...Great Yarmouth Wharf Post Office 1937.

Michael Portillo did an excellent piece on Great Yarmouth in his Great British Railway Journeys but cant find the particular episode on you tube. The scale of the Herring industry from Great Yarmouth was staggering, but probably also a cautionary tale of overexploitation of natural resources.

PS.....youtube isnt the only show in town though! Its here on "Dailymotion"...never heard of it.

That Aston Martin Bike is quite something and yes, eye-wateringly expensive! Makes Chris Froome's Pinarello Dogma F8 look quite budget-priced!

It has to be said though that against the bikes now available today it is really nothing special at all... It's now quite an old design.. Bleeding edge then but not so much now...

Not that I'd refuse one as a gift ;)

Back on topic, The bits of Norfolk I've seen I rather like... Norwich is a nice place as cities go and lots of preserved railways of all sorts which would make it quite a Mecca for me.. I'd find the lack of hills a bit tedious on the bike though...

The only downside, as you allude Peter, is that it's a bit busy and frenetic in parts...

...about 13 mins into MP's Great Railway Journey episode linked to above, there is an interesting bit on Reedham Swing Bridge, a little Norfolk gem

Yes, MP was an MP, and was considered to be a possible PM.

Yes, that's true James :D Bet if he had become PM we'd have had an excellent railway system by now!

I seem to recall he helped to save the Ribblehead viaduct (Settle to Carlisle railway), and (when he rode across it in his Railways program) he considered that to be one of his better decisions.

If that was all he ever achieved it would have been worth it...

Just as we have John Major to thank for our Olympic success since Barcelona ;)

Yes, really!

Me, too. As a child, I remember the gable-end of a Macfisheries shop at one end of Northfields Avenue, Ealing.
In foot-high painted lettering, it simply proclaimed
EAT MORE FISH
AND BUY IT HERE.
