This little blog is a chronicle covering the replacement of the Clutch in Davie's Activa...

Since arriving yesterday aboard an AA recovery lorry, some good progress some good progress has been made

The Hub nuts have been loosened and thank goodness for S1 Activa wheels having removable centres! Due to the non-operative handbrake I had to pop the wheel centres out and undo the hub nuts with the wheels on the ground.

The lower swivel joints have been separated, the gearbox drained, the RH driveshaft intermediate bearing released from its housing and remarkably it went with ease which is unusual as often they put up a heck of a fight

Just to balance how easily the RH driveshat came apart, the LH one is playing up. It's stuck in the hub and is currently getting a feed of Plus Gas. If it doesn't soon shift with my club hammer I may have to invest in a bigger hammer!!!

The weather is rapidly deteriorating and I may not get much more done today but it's a good start!

I remember my first clutch change on TCT engine. I was looking like an idiot when I saw the design of forks and release bearing (pulling not pushing ) and to align these two is quite a PITA.

If WFA can't then we'll assume it's been welded in!

Yes, it's how I always do them... The car is high enough to slip the 'box down and out of the way...

Unusual, normally they just slip out! Might end up taking the hub off complete....! Had to do that with a Visa once - the caliper was playing up but we couldn't shift the bolts (they were so tight that my Dad broke the ring on a 19mm ring spanner swinging on it with a 6ft scaff pole!) and we didn't have the means to undo the hub nut, so it had to come off hub drive shaft and caliper complete, and fit the spare one we had in the garage (having broken another Visa a couple of years earlier).

They do, that's right Richard. Never known anything like it. Both are the same and it seems odd. I even had a hub puller on them a while back before rain stopped play and still no go...

My plan is to whip them out hubs and all if an overnight soak in Plus Gas and another go with hub puller and hammer fails...

If need be I can whip the CV joint apart and press them out in the hydraulic press...

A little more progress made before the weather intervened...

Aiebox and battery tray off. LHM reservoir and ABS block next...

It is a tidy car, only bits on the body to worry about is one of the rear door shuts is a bit crusty and will need attention, and a couple of bits on the driver side sill a bit soft, may need attention soon. It looks all original paint to me, and it has the odd mark or two, but it's 18 years old! Super condition for its age and 120000 odd miles.

I'm glad you beat me to buying it Davie. My dear wife would have had a meltdown if the clutch had gone on me so soon after the C4 shenanigans

It will be good having a How to done by yourself Jim. Should keep all your guides and sell them as a Jim's Workshop Manual, known as BOT [emoji23]

I agree ... with a little bit of technology this forum could youtube a lot more of the jobs becoming necessary to keep these cars going. Must admit to being inspired a lot more now that the weather has begun to turn. Problem is i've got three screwed cars and not enough time to go round. And theyre all blocking each other, a bit like Jims front drive yesterday. V6 is on the outside and needs sills patched for MOT and then matrix. And two activas completely unroadworthy, one needs rams fixng, the other has a coolant leak which looks like it needs the engine out to sort. Sigh!! I can feel the initial inspiration draining away slowly....

Think of it like eating an elephant Mike, it can be done if attempted in small bites... Doesn't matter how long it takes... Hell it took me 9 months to finally put a permanent mains feed into my workshop!

Just bough one of these babies to help shift the driveshafts - I hope...

I'm still amazed and appoogetic that the clutch has gone in such a short time after I sold it to you, Davie. I really hand't considered that to be a problem, just one of those things I guess.

However, very happy that you've stuck with it and have Jim to help out with its replacement clutch

Its a great car and its pretty tidy for its age and you're right, the paintwork is in great condition for its age. The usual age related door jams are a shame but its rare to see a Xantia which isn't giving a little there now, though it still seems pretty solid and hasn't really changed since I've had it, probably as I very rarely drove it in the rain As it seems its water and salt from the rear wheels which get sprayed into the join between the panels and into that seam, from the inside out.

I'm looking forward to seeing its progress Jim, I'm sure you'll have it back to its old self again very soon
