Nope, not an Edsel.. Its grille got a lot of criticism in the day because it looked a bit like a piece of female anatomy... It did't have a light in the middle of it..

I thought only the Rover P4 Cyclops sported such a thing.
Now if it were a Rover P4 Cyclops it may have looked like this....very nice too

and if it were an Edsel it may have looked like this

Malcolm shows his class again, although the heavy clue was in amongst his odd/funny/place/street names thread

It is an Austin A90 Atlantic Convertible

Wheres this then?

Unread post by NewcastleFalcon »

When you spot something like this you just have to get the camera out. Unfortunately mine has gone kaput, so I had to persuade my youngest daughter to take one with her I-phone. Luckily she is quite used to my foibles so wasn't entirely surprised by my request, having previously snapped a The Renault 4GTl in a traffic jam, and the nice 3-wheeler.

Anyone familiar with this? Not in its first flush of youth, but still quite an eye-catching piece of architecture. Pretty remarkable that no vehicles at all were passing at the time so its definitely not the M25 :)

Surprisingly its not from the set of "The Jetsons"

Question is where's this then :?:

I was impressed when I first saw that, on my way to Blackpool.
Stopped there for a coffee on the way back.

Pass on the Jetsons though.

Didn't actually see Blackpool, went to meet someone there, (Fridgemagnet's girlfriend if I am not mistaken) had been at my cousin's in Heysham.
Have some photo's somewhere but I believe it is defunct now.

Well done Steve & Northern Mike yes its Lancaster Forton Services.....

From Wiki

"Opened in 1965 with the name Forton services, it was the second service station to open on the motorway (Charnock Richard being the first), and is named after the nearby village of Forton. The architect was T.P. Bennett and Son and it was originally operated by The Rank Organisation.

The services is notable for an unusual hexagonal concrete tower on the northbound side, named The Pennine Tower, which originally housed an up-market restaurant and a sun deck. The tower was designed to resemble an Air Traffic Control Tower and is a prominent local landmark. The tower closed to the public in 1989 due to current Fire Regulations (there is no means of providing an alternative exit from the restaurant deck in an emergency), and is only used for storage and occasional staff training. The original pentagon-shaped elevators which served the tower are still used to service the ground floor and first floor of the building."
The Tower was listed Grade II on 15th October 2012.

Maybe there wasn't enough call for a "Sun-Deck" in Lancashire, or indeed enough people having the conversation

"Where should we go for an up-market meal tonight Darling?"

and coming up with the answer "Lancaster Services on the M6 is nice...."

Although listed as closed there it has been reopened a few times since.
I'm not sure when I was there but it would have been about seven years ago and was certainly open then.

There are a number of motoring related listed buildings dotted around the Country as well as the Pennine Tower at Lancaster services.

For example

Here's one in Devon

I've passed this one I think, on the A1/M on my way to Peterborough most recently.
Certainly the same architecture.

Couldn't be sure of the precise location though.
