Malcolm, there's only a half pint on offer now, cos I have awarded Mike a half for one element of his double guess being right.

the other half goes to the identification of the bit, and exactly what it is! Not the heater/screen vent but getting warmer! With the clues so far google is bound to come up with the answer!

If it was the right way up it may be more identifiable (not by me though)

Yes its a 2CV, so one half pint has gone.....but its not heater/blower controls or the boot lid.

So what else would knobs operate in a 1959 2 CV? You could try googling "1959 2CV knobs" for example (on second thoughts maybe not...)

Well the google search did produce some interesting results including

A brochure for the 1959 2CV in French, although no pictures of the "whatsthisthen" artifact

1959 2CV Brochure

and this little story
The 2CV Pick-ups supplied to the Royal Navy

In 1957, the British Royal Navy was preparing to send two aircraft carriers, HMS Bulwark and HMS Albion, to take a detachment of Royal Marines to deal with the rebels in the Malaysian jungle. Ground transport was needed and the vehicles had to be sufficiently robust and reliable to cope with jungle tracks and worse and had to be light enough to be taken ashore by helicopter from the aircraft carriers. An admiral on HMS Bulwark had seen a 2CV Pick-up at a Citroën dealer near Portsmouth, borrowed it to take it on board for his next voyage, put it through many tests and returned it to the dealer. The Royal Marines Commanding Officer on board HMS Bulwark was so impressed that he ordered four more.

Neil, that's really wonderful about the 2CV wireless :-D Really enjoyed that...

Back in the 60s there were a number of car wirelesses that were also portable and many wirelesses of the period had a car aerial socket so they could be used inside the car as long as you had an aerial on the car.

Earlier car wirelesses had valves in them which required an HT supply of 100v or so. This was frequently generated using a vibrator power pack which was both big, noisy and thirsty of battery power. Leave the wireless on without the engine running and the battery would soon be flat...

The last development for valve car wirelesses were special valves thta would run on 12v. These often had valves in the signal stages and transistors in the audio amplifer and spleaker driver as in those days transistors were no good for radio frequency work.

I recall seeing a car with a record player in it - it looked like a very big CD player and the 45rpm single (all it could play) was fed in through a slot.

Malcolm,

The car attached to the record player is worth a whatsthisthen on its own. Unfortunately I dont know the answer at the moment, so the pints will have to be awarded on the basis of evidence posted up.

Well, based on the chrome and the pedal in this link I think the car might be a 1956 DeSoto Fireflite Indy Pacesetter Convertible;
