Davie's french attraction.

Unread post by daviemck2006 »

Hi guys. Ive been around here for a while now, good some good advice when I had a C5 a few years ago. Had a Pug 107 for last 2 years, so was thinking I was a bit of an imposter, cos it's not really French, well the badge on the bonnet maybe is! I've made a deal to swap it for a C4vts, coming over from Belfast on Saturday. I'm saying deal, I mean swap, a 2009 bug with 51k on clock for a 2007 C4vts 2.0 16v 180 with 50k on clock, on Irish plate. Folk will think I'm loaded and called Leslie! I'm looking forward to getting it, I've loved the bug, but it was bought for doing 90 miles a day commuting, and due to back problems haven't worked since July, and only done 4000 miles in that time, so I thought since petrol costs don't matter so much I might as well have a bit of poke. The only C4 I have driven id a 1.6hdi with the egs box. This is what I was going to go for until I drove it. Engine had enough go, but what an unresponsive and slow devil of a gearbox. Then thought about a 1.6hdi manual and decided that as I don't do many miles anymore I wouldn't take the chance of turbo failure and all the dpf and Eolys rubbish. Then I was gonna do a deal with Franklin for his red leob, but distance was a little bit too far. So when I saw this vts advertsed on the bay, I contacted the guy and it turns out he was selling to buy a 107 or C1 for daughter to learn in. A few txts and phone calls later, deal done, and he's getting ferry, I'm driving 200 miles, then swap. I'm happy, so is he. I might be able to overtake lorries now

The 107 is a brilliant little car, for what is really an extremely basic city car. Graet little 1.0 3 cyl engine which thrives on revs, yet still returns amazing economy. It's got bags of character and great fun to fling about (slowly) all over the place. With it's skinny bike tyres can get to its limits no problem and have fantastic fun whilst doing it, and keep your licence clean. I will miss it.

How did I get into french cars? I have no idea. My dad was a confirmed vauxhall man, had loads of victors. The 1st car I remember him having was a victor 101, white with a red roof, reg number BSE 365C. He then had a succession of victors, but then defected to BL with a Princess 2.2 HLS, 1977, reg TSE 599R, with a radio  This is what I learned to drive in. I thought it was great. Big car, big comfy velour seats, seriously comfortable hydragas suspension. Actually not that much different really to my own C5 I sold 2 years ago. My own first car was french, a Simca 1301 inherited from an uncle, not very old, I got it through an mot with a rotten boot floor covered by cardboard and the 1980 equivalent of Duck tape  When it died then bought an allagro 1.1, because the reg no was BSE365S and reminded me of my dads victor. Another rust bucket, hydrogas suspension again, gave a cracking ride and could show up the cortinas and escorts of the day up in the corners. Then started my vauxhall years, dad had sold the wedge and got a mk1 astra, When he changed it, I bought it was only 1.5 years old and 5000 miles. Loved it and followed on with another mk1 astra, then cavalier then manta, then came my leyland days, maestro, montego, rover 216, rover 3500sdi, yes I went back in years between the two rovers. Couldnt keep the v8 in fuel, or body filler and paint for that matter, Sold it, renault 18 then ford mondeo. Had 3 kids by this time, people carrer needed cue a galaxy v6. Again fuel was an issue, changed for pug 806 1.9td. My first diesel and I loved it. The turbo whistle going up the road to our house was addictive! Then picasso hdi, then wife tok off with a mate, sorry ex mate with a sore face! Pic had to go, biught a zx 1.8 as a stop gap. It broke bid time then I did a fiat spell, with two puntos and a stilo, them met another woman who had kids and went for the ulysse jtd. It went for the C5, 2.2hdi, and then the pug 107 which is bang up to date.

Also had loads of other cars along the line, we always had two cars, one each. The ones listed have been our main car. Others were changed more regularly, I used to buy a bucket from auctions, or the round the back trade-ins at dealers, clean them up, fix them, run for a few months then sell, usually for more than I paid. I cant remember all of them, astras, corsa renault 5 and clio, cit ax and saxo, pug 106, audi A4, merc vito, c-class, mondeo, focus, seat ibiza and leon, but stopped doing that due to work and she had a 206 and now the current MINI. Me and her splitting at the mo, the house is sold and flat rented, 2xmarried, 2nd divorce soo, and I wont have to suffer the MINI again. It's been the most unreliable car I have ever owned ( actually don't own it thank god) Its well named as BINI, and as far as I am concerned it can go to a bin with her inside it

That's enough for now, I'll get pics up of the 107 when I can figure out how to, and of the C4 when it arrives

There seems to be a growing amount of C4 owners on here. I'm getting quite impatient waiting for Saturday to come round now. The thing I'm going to hate about it is handing over £250 for the road tax :grr: don't think I'll notice the difference in fuel so much, doing far less miles nowadays. Ran an insurance quote today, I know I'm an old git and never claimed, and the result was £151 =D> \:D/ :bd: :cd: might even have a celebratory drink :teabag:

Was washing the 107 today and thinking I am going to miss it. For a little tiny dare I say japaneese city car it is unbelievably good. It's given me 40000 miles (was 11000 when I bought it) utterly reliable and cheap. Has averaged 60mpg regularly, not had a penny spent on repairs, never been inside a garage, had 4 oil and filter changes, 2 spark plug changes and 1 brake fluid change. Bought 4 tyres, not counting the alloys I bought for £200 then sold 15000 miles later for £220) It's fun to drive, and for me a bit individual, not your standard slabs of black plastic inside. I probably will have another in the future.

The cars are swapped, both of us are happy. Only driven the c4 about 30 miles so far. I'm at my sisters in Carluke. The long run up the road will take place tomorrow. It's in excellent condition, no bumps or scratches I can see, however it is wet and car is no too clean outside, could do with a polish. Inside is immaculate and lots of buttons that I don't know what they do yet. The drive is good, no rattles or noises, apart from I think there is a blow from the exhaust somewhere. Loads of power, good clutch, gearbox and brakes. Was comfortable at ??mph on the motorway and on the back roads. Slight vibration in steering at 60ish, would think balance needs doing, but there,s more probability of two new tyres as they are budgets all round, rears plenty of tread, fronts worn on shoulders. Roof is carbon wrapped, don't know why, has a glass roof. Wrap will be coming off. Good first impression then, I think we'll get along. Got a personal plate which I think I'll put up for sale once the paperwork comes through.

That does sound like a good swap there Davie. I hope your happy with your C4 VTS, that'll be a pretty lively performer!

The 107 is great fun to drive and you'll no doubt miss it for that if nothing else. its basic-ness and simplicity are a big plus with all these complex and highly equipped modern cars.

Our C1 is going this week too, I'll really miss it as it is fantastic fun but something bigger and more refined is in order.

I sometimes am wondering if I have done the right thing. The 107 had nothing to go wrong, could do a service with eyes shut in no time and for pennies. Far more potential for gremlins, £250 road tax 35mpg, but was surprised how cheap insurance is. I dont do nearly as many miles now, so mpg wont worry so much, c4 only done 50k so hopefully won't break. Have to look for headlamp protectors, apparently new headlights are nearly a grand  Presumably because it's the vts with xenon lights that are self levelling and turn round corners and are scarce.

I bet you will miss the wee c1 Chris, They are superb in the town. The guy that bought mine for his daughter foned me tonight, he had 80 miles to drive to Stranrar for the ferry to Belfast and he could not believe how good it is, he runs a small company and has three ford ka's as company cars for his workers, was going to go for a ka for his daughter and now says he's gonna get another three bugs! What is replacing the c1, or is it going another slimming down off the family fleet?

Looking forward to the pictures...!

Don't worry about the C4s - IMO they are sincerely underrated cars and generally very good in terms of reliability...

Enjoy the new power!

I had a word with one of my neighbours a couple of weeks ago. He has had a C4 coupé for about seven years now, demonstrator bought with only a few thousand miles on it.
He does his own maintenance but it has only needed standard servicing and a pair of rear springs, one broke but he replaced both at the same time.
It still looks and drives like new.

It's snowing here this morning. Just what I need, new car to me, wide wheels with front tyres quite worn 220 miles to drive. I bought winters for the 107 in november and never drove it in snow since. Isn't it typical!!!!!!!!!!

The C1 is being traded in for a C3 Picasso 1.6HDi VTR+. The C1 is great but something a bit larger and more useful with our lifestyles which offers more space and refinement but with low running costs was appealing. The Picasso is ideal and is not just a boring box like a lot of things, its little bit funky, I'm collecting it on Wednesday and quite looking forward to it.

The c4 is home. The weather was crap all the way up the road. Filled up with petrol just after leaving my sisters, it was still above 1/4 and took £61 to fill. That hurts after being used to £45 full tanks! Still only to be expected. 195 miles later, running on the cruise (how I've missed that) between 40 to 70 depending on conditions and traffic, average fuel 35.6 mpg, average speed 49.4. I'm happy enough with that for a 2.0 litre petrol. Really comfy, I'm 6ft, a bit overweight and a knackered back and am highly sensitive to driving position, and it suits me ok. Traction wasn't great, and abs kicked in sooner than I would have liked, but putting that down to the budget chineese tyres worn down to about 3mm, just a guess I've not measured them yet. They will be replaced in the very near future. The rear tyres are the same, but little wear, I'll probably move them forward and run them over the summer, with something new on the rear, then change them so I have 4 the same by next winter. The roof i carbon fibre wrapped, I really dont know why, theres a full length glass roof, with blinds inside. The wrap will be removed on the first dry day, before I even wash it

If I'm honest, I love the car, but don't think the 2.0 180bhp is the correct engine for me. Theres not a large amount of low and mid range pull, it is fast but needs revs. Not my driving style at all really. Turbo diesel would be the way to go, thinking really 2.0hdi vts. THe petrol is very good I think hdi would be brilliant! No photos yet, it's too dirty, too cold and too dark. I hope I get the weather to clean it in the start of the week. I have hospital treatment on my back to get on Thursday, two steroid epidural injections into my lower spine, my spine is too far knackered to operate on again so this is the only chance I have to get some relief from the constant soreness and might mean I won't have to scoff about 20 pain killers each day. Besides getting a bigger car I think I should have bought a van to pick up my prescription from the chemist
