Removing remains of the sound proofing for welding

I've peeled off the sound proofing from the sides of the boot but there is still a fairly even spread of fibres stuck to the inner wing. So far I've got away with a bit of smouldering from welding the opposite side. The problem now is that I need to weld directly onto the side with the fibres on so I'd like to remove most of them so my G doesn't turn into a ball of flames but I'm not sure what I should be using as I don't really want to remove any of the paint work.

I remember citronut giving me a couple of tips about this but I can't for the life of me remember what he said!

You'll need to remove the paint to weld it anyway..... flap disc or wire brush in the angle grinder.

You need to find the right solvent to get the remainder of the insulation off - probably one of white spirit, meths or acetone.

i would just use a scraper to get most of it away, then a use blow torch in a controlled fashion,

as long as you point the flame the other direction to the rest of the felt, and you response is quick to stop any flames catching hold it'll be fine

Scraper. Blow torch, then have a friend stood by with a fairy liquid bottle full of water as you weld near it, just to squirt any flames out. This seemed to be the acceptable method in both garages I worked in back in the 80s.. Generally I was the one holding the bottle. Now, what sort of place these days would allow a 14 year old with a squeezy bottle to sit in a Marina van while it's floor/bulkhead was welded from the outside as the only fire protection?

its the grinder sparks you should be concerned about more so , as they sneak up the felt that is further away than the heat from the welding than you had thought about

I went for the grinder with a sanding disk approach in the end. There was still a bit of smoke but the fairy liquid bottle was at the ready!
