Megane Scenic II Auto brake problem

Hi, my 04 MkII Scenic 1.5 dci auto handbrake is making an awful squeeling sound (normally when on a hill) when it activates and says handbrake fault on the dashboard. Could it be that the cable has come off its normal route, un hooked itself or something? It works ok when on the flat though!! It has had full dealer servicing.
