Difference between the EW10J4 and J4S

Hey guys

What's the difference between the 2 engines? The J4 puts out 134/141 bhp and the S puts out 174 bhp.

I know the S has variable valve timing on the inlet cam but is that all? If so who does a cam upgrade to that? I'd love it for me J4

Pretty sure the J4 has VVT too. I think it is basically the same engine, but with different cams, throttle body, ECU map, manifolds, the head will be flowed differently etc.

I have a J4, I would know if it had VVT. The exhaust cam is the same, the inlet cam is different.

Hmmm, that is disappointing, always thought mine had it, but perhaps it doesn't...

You may be better off with a fixed timing sportier cam from someone like Cat, and a remap. Otherwise it is potentially a mongrel of a job as you would have to get some compatible ECU coded in.

Adam, there is a guy from Aussiefrogs, Peter T. This guy is the champ at doing cam regrinds!

Seems to know all the in's and out's of tuning these engines, both for stock ECU's and aftermarket. Lost his contact details tho

I do know Peter and also where he gets his cams done; however he is more into the older engines. My 405 has an indexing sprocket key made by the late Owen, one of his best friends.

Cat and several other companies already cater for the EW10J4S in their catalogues and it would probably make more sense for the OP (seeing as he is already in the EU) to buy "locally".

I didn't realise the non variable timing ECU wouldn't support a variable timing cam after a remap.

I had had a look earlier at a few upgraded cams for the J4 head and apparently they don't even make the same power as the stock J4S head.
For instance - Catcams' upgrade, with a remap would only push the bhp and torque up 23bhp/24lb/ft respectively.
Having a look at the technical detail shows why it isn't that big a lift, it only gives 3 degrees longer duration and less than 1mm extra valve lift.

Upgrading to the variable valve timing has to be the way to go for decent power from the EW10.

Plus my car has the business signage on it and is relatively low mileage so I don't want to sell it for a while.

If the plug is there for the variator solenoid, perhaps the existing ECU can be reflashed? I doubt it, though.

With the cam swap, I was assuming it were on an "S" head, so you would have the slight benefit of a larger exhaust cam and better flow anyway. Plus you get the fabricated headers.

After further research into this I'm going to add some details:

The J4S set up has a different inlet system.
The J4S pistons either have valve cut-outs or different valve cut-outs to the J4.
The exhaust manifold is different.

Hey all new the page. Have Trained as a Peugeot mechanic since 2003 and the old 206 GTI180 was the first car I Trained on and seeing the EW10J4S I was smitten so much that when I got out of my time I had to buy one. There are a lot of differences between the J4S/J4 and even the EW10A. The head is different obviously cause of the VVT but not only that, also it houses the 2.2LT valves and lifters. The bottom end gets fully floating MAHLE pistons and forged steel Conrods the block also gets piston squirter jets and there's also a plug on the back of the block that also doubles as the water return for the turbo version when fitted to rallye cars. It gets a larger engine oil heat exchanger and larger capacity sump. My cars never taken less than 6lts of oil. There are other differences too but thought I mention these to help.
